as stan said. most of my trips are shorter than 3 days, in a day if you do a alot of buy & flys you can get around Alot of coffeeshops. in de pijp area theres a whole load all close to each other and cheaper with better hash than central coffeeshops. read travelogues. ones i visit regular
utopia, voyagers, paradox, 1e hulp, greenplace (not so much recently),de graal, kabouter, katsu(NL/sp), club media, yoyo, d&l, ibiza. pop on train to haarlem for birdys coffeeshop(jelly hash) there are tons more

i wouldn't worry about chasing stuff. you're going to have a fantastic time no matter what.
don't fall into the trap of doggedly searching out certain coffeeshops. I've done it myself in the past, oh i'll just go down one more street, one more bend in the canal, the bloody thing must be around here somewhere. no good.

early in the morning is, IMHO, the best time to arrive in Amsterdam, you get to walk around the center while the city wakes up, later when the sun goes down and the city lights up, it is exciting, tell us your opinion in a trip report, have fun and watch out for art it is everywhere

Where are you staying?

I'd spend some time using Google maps as a way to orient myself to my surroundings. They contain a wealth of information and they are a fun way to explore the city you are about to visit!

If you like the soft black hash, I smoked some nice clean squidgy Nepalese at Utopia on my last trip that I can recommend. I think they also have blonde hash too. In the past I have also bought good hash in CS Central.

First things first. Walk out of Centraal Station and look straight ahead. That's Damrak. Slightly left is the white building that will sell you a 72hr travelcard for little money (less than 20e). buy one and look back down Damrak. As it is early you have a limited choice of shops. Look half left and walk over the canal, cross the busy road (trams, bikes and cars) and you have Central Coffeeshop. Not a bad place for an early morning coffee and spliff. Further to the left of Central you come to Voyagers, opens about 10ish. Top herb. Probably wont get out of there until check-in time. Carry ID, for Voyagers especially.

If you have a smartphone download the app from here: http://9292.nl/en# Disable roaming on the phone and only use it where free wi-fi is. With the map and this site and the app you will get directions to any CS easily. Saves a lot of shagging about looking for places.

Now, newbie CS. Voyagers, Utopia, Paradox are a must. If Paradox have the finger hash then indulge. Please spend a half day at least down in De Pipj. Katsu, Yo-Yo, Club Media, Papillon are all good and the area is a great place.

Get a T&T set up and meet others. Make it a centralish shop and see what happens.

Lot of good tips here! Listen to sailor and get a 72 hour tram pass before you get baked. This way you can just jump on trams and learn as you go. Hit voyagers first, absolutely.

If you dont have variety where you're from, then Don't pass on hash because you think it's to strong. It's just different. Smoke less is of it is all. The flavor and high equal to any grass, just don't smoke as much see.

All plans you make will go to shit once your stoned. Get a few grams from voyagers and then spend day looking about the city popping in and out of random shops. Voyagers for grass, birdys for hash, then i dunno That's my working plan for return/second trip.

This is rock solid advice....once that first high hits, all plans usually go to the wind.

Planning on much the same this year, less strains, more enjoyable highs, and taste the weed...only get there once a year if lucky, so taste it and enjoy it.

Hear, hear! So true. My first visit was in 1999 for three days. I tacked it on the end of a larger European
vacation and did it as a bucket list kind of thing, with no intention of coming back. I thought, well, I got it out of my system. Seven trips later and I still write down stuff I want to do in upcoming visits. You can do a lot of damage (the good kind ) in three days. You'll be back.

The question should really be: What places should I avoid? My 2 cents: Most of the cs's are good and serve quality products. There are many more good cs's than bad ones, which I find admirable because Amsterdam has had a monopoly on this for a long time and probably never had to offer "great" weed to enjoy the financial benefits of its world-wide monopoly. Yes, you will always find someone who says, "Dude, the weed in California or Colorado or my cousin's basement is better," however, they're missing the point. The freedom to smoke, vape, eat and sample tons of different strains of good, very good, or great weed and hash in a place where it is legally allowed/tolerated is priceless. You don't need a medical prescription, you don't need to be a resident of a certain state or country, you don't have to make the "right" connection, and you don't have to grow it. Just show up and you'll find the phrase "kid in a candy store" takes on a whole new meaning! Ah, I'm going on a bit 'cause I miss the place; this will be the first year I haven't visited in a while.

Ok then, so where to avoid? See that horrible 3 story, brick building in front of you as you exit Centraal Station (Damrak is to the right)? It's called The Grasshopper. AVOID THE GRASSHOPPER!!!!!! Bad gear, bad service, bad vibes.

I would like to contribute a relatively positive statement about the grasshopper.

many years ago,( twenty-two maybe twenty-three years, i'm not completely sure), on something like my fifth trip, I wandered into the big grasshopper and was really taken with it. the coffeeshop was in the cellar like now but it was much larger, with booths and a sort of picture window looking out onto the water with a view of the pleasure boats etc.
the coffees and toasties were served by women who must have been selected for their looks, which is always a help. like all the coffeeshops that I had experienced at the time you were free to spend as long as you liked smoking your weed and chatting with an amazing variety of people, which is more than you can say for a lot of the modern places.
coffeeshop dope was pretty much of a muchness in those days so their weed was pretty good too, and of course everything cost twenty five guilders a bag so there wasn't really that much competition on price in the city centre anyway.
you have to remember that I am talking about a pre-internet trip to Amsterdam so my judgement wasn't clouded by unwarranted preconceptions and the pointless reshaping of the coffeeshop scene into the image prescribed by various internet fora, but there you are, a relatively positive statement about the grasshopper.

it's probably shit now though.
