Banshee Beat trip report #1: 16/11 - 19/11

Post by banshee beat »

This time was possibly my ninth but I'm not entirely sure. I was there with two of my best friends. I myself, like most of you, smoke everyday and have for a very long time BUT do not smoke anything like as much as I do in dam - because of monetary constraints and what my job entails. I didn't get to visit a lot of my favourites because my friends didn't want to do a huge amount of walking so we had to give Bij/BJs, Graal, Media and some others a miss. Shame but I'll be back for a solo trip soon enough so I'll make up for lost smoke. Sorry for the lack of photos, I have no camera and the phone doesn't cut it.

DAY 1

Voyagers - Went in to start my trip as I always do, with some super bio lemon haze. Ah. They don't have any. WHAT?? Well that's fine, I love a bit of kosher kush so I get two grams at €15/g. Didn't smoke it till the evening because I wanted to start with a sativa but when I did... Woooaaaah. Absolute knockout. Really. Best kosher I've ever had for sure and a certain contender for the strongest weed I've ever had in dam. Or most places for that matter. Smell and taste were fantastic as you'd expect and it was veeeerrry sticky to the touch but not enough so to be annoying.

Dampkring 2 - Voyagers was a buy n fly because my mate really wanted to sit in Barney's Uptown for the first smoke and get his favourite strain. We walked past Dampkring 2 and I realised it'd be nice to get some hash to start things off (instead of the planned SBLH) so we dropped in and I got a gram of lovely jasmine at €11/g I think. The budtender was a standoffish asshole as usual and shouted at my mate who took her phone out while rearranging her pockets, so we left. Shame because I do sometimes like to chill upstairs. And the hash was a lovely maroc. Not soft but not too hard, lovely strong spicy hash flavour with thick smoke and leaning on the heavier side of a sativa high.

Barney's Coffeeshop - I didn't actually go in because I wanted to run down to get my sativa elsewhere but my friend got a beautiful two gram nug of tangerine dream for €15/g. Lovely smoke as always but he unfortunately lost it after only two joints!!

Amnesia - While they were in Barney's, I popped down here to quickly see what the acapulco gold was saying. It's one of those strains that never fails for me and I get it every trip. Another €15/g strain that I think is totally worth the price. Beautiful long sativa buds with that almost minty smell as an accompaniment. Such a great strain to start the day and trip with. I also must mention that as always, the budtender was nothing but helpful and actually a delight to buy from. He seemed to remember me and appreciated my return. So that put a smile on my face.

La Grotte - All three Barney's were rammed so when I rejoined my friends we popped in here because it was relatively empty. We all had our first joints and a mint tea each. Lovely setting, lovely staff, lovely tea, lovely first smoke. Great place.

Greenhouse Lounge - We wanted to pop in here to check out the hashes but it was packed with rude Russian cunts in sleeveless puffer jackets and the budtenders were being bellends too so we left very quickly. What a surprise

Dampkring - After checking into our hostel and having some more smokes, we had dinner in a great Italian place at the bottom of Spuistraat before heading over here. This has always been a hash place for me. The weed is great but the hash is really top top top. So I got a gram of the sensabille for €15 because it's never let me down. And it didn't. Best hash of the trip. Just perfect texture, taste, smell, stone, everything. Bought another two grams to send home after one joint of this stuff. Male budtender was great but female bartender was slightly pushy, but it's okay we were gonna get drinks anyway. My friends got a gram of nepalese temple balls for €16/g and nepalese pollen for €13. I'm not a massive fan of nepalese in general because of the taste but the stone is always a surefire for me. I actually much preferred the pollen to the temple balls. Both were very pliable and had that lovely body stone but the pollen just tasted more maroc-y and that's good for me. Not really worth the price though, and the temple balls were definitely not worth €16. No waaaaay...

Kadinsky - We cut across to this place but to be honest weren't all that impressed with anything we looked at. Shame because I'm usually a sucker for their hash but it seemed we could do (and had already done) better we moved on without a buy.

Green Place - After having a canal-side stroll and smoke, we hit Cotton Club jazz bar in Nieuwmarkt which was nice and just what we were feeling. After this we decided to make one last late night purchase at GP before heading back home to finish some weeds. I gotta say, I'm really conflicted with this place. The atmosphere is pretty poor, not a huge fan of the decor and usually the people hanging out there are on the slightly obnoxious side. Needless to say, the budtenders were absolute dickheads. Really. Very very rude, pushy and all round bastards. That Asian cunt tried hard to hurry us but I refused and got another to begrudgingly do it. On the other hand, the twizzla at €13/g was looking great as always so I got a three grams (two to send home). Always a lovely smoke and always fantastic value for money. Really good batch too, very bubbly for something like this. We looked at some shoreline, OG lemon and jack herer too. The first smelt great but only had shitty little popcorn buds left, the second didn't seem like anything worth getting and by the time we got to the jack the BT's were absolutely steaming so we decided to split.

Finished the night with a crowded RLD walk and a smoke/huuugely overpriced pint at a little bar on Warmoestraat just by Wijde Kerksteeg. We smoked some more in our prison-like hostel room - it's cheap for a reason and it's in an awesomely convenient and pretty part of centrum so no complaints here!! As I said, that kosher finished me. Total and utter blitzkrieg! Boom!

More tomorrow...

DAY 2

Wake up with a stiff back from the "mattress", that was a block of wood with a few inches of sand on top, and quite a stone-over with a kosher still looming so decide not to hit a wake and bake till after breakfast which we had at the place next to 420 (on left as you come out). This set us up nicely so we headed back down the alley to...

Utopia - Of course one of my all time favourites. Always a pleasure. Had a great long chat with the young English BT and the lady sitting at the counter (who I think also worked there) about the state of things and the ACD and Nel's position and everything. It was lovely. They are really really good people and I'm sure they'll do just fine after the restrictions are imposed. Bad things don't happen to good people like this. Anyway my friends didn't really want to wait for another 10 minutes while I chatted away so I had a look at some tubs. They all looked amazing, as you'd expect, but the citral has been a personal favourite for a while so I bought two grams at €12/g. It's definitely the best batch I've tried. Masterfully cured, intense citrus aroma, powerful indica stone (despite being a hybrid but I really couldn't find much sativa in there) and GOOD GOD the most sparkly buds I've ever witnessed. Like a diamond. Don't have this thing out in the sun because the reflection will blind you. One of the best smokes of the trip easily.

Homegrown Fantasy - My friends had never been here before and liked the idea of an all organic menu (plus they wanted to halt my blabbering with the lovely Utopia staff) so we skipped across to have a look. The citral here didn't look as good as across the road but actually had a much nicer lemon scent so one friend got a gram of it at €11. The taste translated very well but it definitely lacked the power of the Utopia's. This was actually better for the time and place seeing as we were still a little drowsy. The other friend wanted a nice fruity sativa so went for a gram of the seres hilton for €10. Nice morning smoke. Nothing particularly special about this batch, I've had better from dampkring in the past but it was still nice and worth the €10 for sure. Good characteristic slightly tangeriney smell to it. Slightly older female BT here was very friendly and helpful too.

Anyday - So we go round the corner to smoke our morning (actually about 3pm by now) purchases and hit a verdamper. Yes!! They've got the reserva x on the menu at €14.50/g which is totally worth it. Looks great so a mate and I get a gram each, to the delight of the very cheery and beautiful young female BT, while my other mate gets a gram of strawberry sour diesel for €14 I think, as well as a gram of champagne ice for €38. So the RX was as brilliant as expected - sweet, smooth, golden hashy smoke with a calm, mellow stone but enough of a kick to be able to function (although after a nice nug of Utopia citral in the verdamper, I'm past the point of any energy). I can't quite remember the strawberry sour diesel but it was definitely a nice smoke/vape and the buds resembled the strawberry cough side in look and smell a lot more than the sour diesel, but the fuel came through a bit I think. The champagne ice wasn't smoked until later but it had a very crumbly texture almost like an OXO cube and a pretty heavy skunky smell and flavour, despite having those thick plumes of hash smoke. Strong but definitely not worth the price. Anyway, this place was pretty much opposite our hostel and was quite a treat. Top marks. The locals were very nice and helpful with the verdamper too (which my mates had never tried before).

We walked down to Albert Heijn on Damrak to get some supplies for a late lunch, as well as some boxes of amandelbrood to take home. Needless to say, we got back to our room and demolished all this. It had been a very stoney day so far and it was all hitting me hard so I decided to have a little nap while my friends went to play chess at 420 and buy some truffles. I woke up refreshed as they came back to pick me up a couple of hours later. Onwards and upwards!

Grey Area - As always, the queue was out the door but it's always actually a nice atmosphere standing around in there and overhearing conversations or looking at all the weird shit adorning the walls. I seem to remember seeing Gapie in there smoking away but I wasn't going to introduce myself because my friends were understandably getting slightly restless with me stopping to talk about ACD and such at every conceivable opportunity. Next time. Anyway we eventually reach the end of the queue and the BT is on the phone and not paying attention. I don't really come here for service, I come for a buy n fly for good weed, and that's what I got. The dog didn't look as good as I'd hoped and the kandy and kosher didn't look as nice as voyagers' so I took a 1.6g bud of strawberry OG for €16/g. More on that one later. My friend got a gram of the afghani cream for €16 which seemed like a nice dark cream but I didn't actually smoke any, I think she sent it home.

So the idea at this point was to get on truffles and go to some place in Rembrandt called AIR. Not my cup of tea but whatever. Problem is, I stopped taking anything besides weed and alcohol a while ago so I wasn't doing it. Which was fine except for the fact that plans never remain as plans when psychedelics are involved. So after some light dinner, they ate the truffles in the room while I drank a couple of beers. One friend (the male one) decided it'd be a great idea to wash it down with half a bottle of wine. Right. So now we walk down to dam square (as they stop and gawk at every building or passerby) and through to the RLD.

Greenhouse Centrum - As we pass this place, one friend has a very sudden urge to get some temple ball. I of course indulge and have a look myself. The staff here were actually very friendly and the place was relatively quiet, being a sunday night. I get half a gram each of jack cream and greenhouse rifcream at €18/g and €13/g respectively. I smoke a bit of both and really enjoy them in my slightly tipsy state so decide to get a whole gram of each to send home. The jack cream is soft and delicious. Slightly on the rich dark side which isn't really to my taste but I really enjoy it nonetheless and it has a great heavy stone which is quite perfect next to the rifcream which has quite the opposite effect. Still got a slight tinge of oily darkness to the taste but definitely get that nice spicy maroc taste through as well. Now while this is going on, my friends and practically falling over each other in giggles by the bud counter and the staff are being really tolerant and even joining in a bit. My friend gets two grams of temple balls at €12.50/g which seems like very standard nepalese stuff at just about the right price... Maybe.. So since we're here, I decide to have a .5g bowl of the Utopia citral which hits me like a donkey kick to the face. WOW. So as I'm just finishing off a bit of a coughing fit, I realise my friends had disappeared. Shit. I thank the staff and leave a tip as I run out.

There's one friend on the floor in hysterics and the other standing over him looking a bit puzzled. Apparently he fainted and then woke up laughing. Right. We sit on a bench and watch the swans until they come up and apparently start giving my mate (the guy - the one that fainted) the 'evil eye' which freaks him out a bit so we gotta go. Onwards to Rembrandt and it's getting pretty late so time to hit AIR. Except, of course, when we get to the queue my mate is freaking out a bit and getting super paranoid so we decide it's best not to go. So we find a nice quiet bar just off the square and have a beer. Nope, he's having none of it. He keeps walking in and out onto the street, clutching a bottle of water. I'm still high as fuck and my other friend is just calmly enjoying her beer and trip but the other friend says he needs to go home. So when we finish our drinks, we take him home because it's his safe place. He says he needs to be alone. Now usually I'd say that's a terrible idea because I have the only key and if he freaks out about being trapped in a prison cell of a room then he can't leave cos he'll get lost and stranded BUT I've been in bad trips before where the best thing is to just ride it out solo in the darkness. So we preroll a few and head out, leaving him behind.

This was probably my favourite part of the holiday. My friend and I just roamed the deserted streets of Jordaan and beyond for hours. It was cold but not too cold, perfectly crisp. There was not a soul to be seen. We admired the architecture and canals for hours. She was completely coherent and not out of it at all really, just enjoying her trip in style. We smoked the big strawberry OG nug in one blunt as our final smoke of the night/morning, as it was approaching about 4.30am. It was such a lovely smoke. I don't really recall the look of the bud but the taste was very sweet and fruity and really had that creamy smooth OG taste going on, which was a nice compliment to the blueberry blunt. I'm not much of a blunt guy these days but it was absolutely perfect. It didn't us too hard but it hit us right where it needed to. We got back to the room and our friend had just dozed off so we did the same.

Hey thanks for the nice comments guys. Hope I can hold your attention till the end

DAY 3

Right so we obviously have quite a late start this morning because of the late night for two of us and fucked night for the other. Surprisingly, we all wake up quite fresh and after showering, we have a nice hashy wake n bake followed by a small but satisfactory breakfast of fruit, tea and amandelbrood. When we're up to it, we make a move. Last full day!!

Anyday (again) - As I mentioned, this place was practically opposite our hostel and we loved everything about it so we figured it'd be a fine way to recharge. Having loved it so much, I got myself another gram of reserva x to smoke and two to send home. My friends each bought a gram of gold for €11/g I think (possibly 10). Another beautiful example of a light blonde moroccan hash. Maple brown on the outside and, as the name suggests, glistening golden on the inside. Nice and soft to the touch, perfect for crumbling as opposed to snaking. Just a great daytime smoke, not an awful lot more to say about it. We smoked at least a gram in there, chatted with another delightful young female BT and prerolled another for a wander.

We walked up to Centraal and were transfixed upon the insane amounts of bikes parked up on that three storey rack outside the station. We were quite mesmerised - which says a thing or two about the hashes as well as the spectacle itself! We continued to walk around north of the station, which I don't think I'd actually ever done, but it started to get quite windy and cold so we found our way to...

Barney's Uptown - For a real meal and hearty smoke. This time it was practically empty so we nabbed that table on the raised platform at the end. I can't remember specifically what any of us got (thanks to the citral) but they were all burgers, they were all good and they were all pretty pricey.

Barney's Coffeeshop (again) - After the meal, we pretty much fell in here. Again, it was pretty much empty so we took a seat. I hadn't been in here with them the time before so I had a good look at the menu. New additions are Chronic Thunder and Peppermint Kush, both roughly €14/15/16 I believe. They both looked decent but I was on more of a hash vibe at the time and looking for something insane to send home so after looking at some liberty melt at €60/g I decided to spoil myself with a half gram. Obviously it's outrageously priced but I'm only holiday and I might as well have one very frivolous buy. I work all year round so I can do shit like this. Ah whatever, shut up, it looked pretty  Aaaanyway I had a bit in a cigarette outside and jesus this stuff is a headfuck. I've made BHO back in Malawi before and I've had a couple of melts and waxes here before but this took the cake. Really. Still not worth the money but almost worth it for the experience. Rock solid high. The stuff itself is very weird. When cold, it's got no smell and it's completely immovable but if it warms up it's like jelly. If you thin it, it's the colour of cola bottle sweets and is practically transparent but if you have a thick rock, it's like a black gemstone. I think it's shatter but I'm far from an expert on this side of the cannabis spectrum so I'll leave you to check it out. -- In fact if anyone could fill me in on it that'd be great -- So I sent the rest home because I wouldn't have done anything else had I finished it. Anyway, it was nice in here all round. BT was cool, I've seen him before down in the lounge near Singel.

Voyagers (again) So time was starting to pass us by and despite numerous attempts to drag my friends along to the 'lesser known' favourite coffeeshops that are a bit further out, they didn't want to. They were leaving much earlier than me the next day so it was alright. Back to Voyagers. Still no SBLH on the menu! Agh! We wanted a nice indica anyway but no need to knock myself back out with more kosher, skywalker seems very similar, kandy was at the end of its tether so my friends get a €20 bag of kushdee which was €15/g I'm quite sure. This was a lovely smoke, well flushed, well cured, quite easy on the kushy exhale but not as heavy as you'd like from a kush. In fact it felt quite hybridy to us. Possibly not worth the 15/g but still a very nice smoke. What happened next was very lucky and quite a beautiful act of human generosity; a group of Canadians (?) were clearly leaving to go to the airport because they had all their bags. They'd been in there the whole time smoking away and we just happened to be the group sitting closest to us so when they got up and left, one of the ladies just said to me "here you go" and handed me a good 2 grams or so of lovely looking buds. I was moonstruck for a second but we all thanked them massively and bid them fairwell. After a good inspection, it seemed quite obvious that this was a lovely batch of amnesia but not from Voyagers (as confirmed by the long haired male BT). I rolled It all into one massive fathead and sparked it just as Andrew Pyrah walked in the door and gave me a look as if to say "niiiice one"... We didn't chat because of previously mentioned disinterest from my mates. The amnesia was a great example of the strain. Very characteristic taste, great uplifting high even with that amount in one joint. Definitely a bio organic, because it wasn't as strong as it could've been but that was just right for the circumstances. After we had thoroughly clouded out the room, people began to fill it out and the staff weren't giving us the kindest of looks so we're off again!

Utopia (again) - We were walking down Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and, of course, hopped back in here. My mates got a gram of citral each and I decided on a gram of the stinky pinky for €15 after reading some conflicting views about it. I needed my own opinion and the silver la didn't have enough la in it on first glance to justify the price. We sat and I rolled one to have there. The buds are quite impressive, the smell is quite sweet actually and, to me, not a million miles off some bubblegum I've had in the past but with almost a bit of a trainwrecky shtank to it. Dunno, I was already pretty high so I could take that back on a second try but that's what I recall. Anyway, I wasn't completely in love but it definitely did the trick. Comfortably heavy body stone with a bit of a detached head high to go with it. Taste translates very well. I enjoyed it quite a bit but would definitely go for the citral over it - better taste, stronger stone, €3 cheaper.

Doors Palace - We popped down the alley to have a beer, smoke and game of pool. Except the pool tables were all taken. So just a beer and a smoke. It was a monday night so not too many people, mainly locals. Alright pint prices for centrum I seem to recall and a much nicer vibe than last time I was here. Had my second (i.e. last) joint of the SP and it hit me right in the stomach. Time for some dinner me thinks.

It's funny how when you're stoned in dam, you often follow paths that you've already trodden even if you'd never trodden them on previous trips. Am I alone on that one? Either way, it seems to happen to me unless I deliberately break the mould. So we went back down Spuistraat and came across a nice looking Argentinian place that did absolutely fantastic ribs. My friend had a big old steak with chips, salad and coke. When we were all done and the waitress came over to ask if we wanted dessert/coffee/the bill she said "you know what... I'll have the same again". WHAT. She's a skinny little lady but man can she demolish a steak. Or two. She put em away with no struggle or help, and trust me I tried. Gave us all a good chuckle. So with our bellies bulging, we plodded down to...

Abraxas - I don't tend to buy weed here because of shitty prices and not even that good quality but I do love the decor and the staff tend to be friendly. So we sat here and smoked while sipping on some nice herbal teas. Washed the meal down nicely. My friend actually decided to buy a gram of nepal for €11. Didn't really pay any attention to it, I may not even have smoked it, but I don't remember anything wrong about it so I'll just leave it at that. Nice game of chess and we're all starting to sag a bit so one last stop.

420 Cafe - Always have time for this place. Lovely staff. Not the greatest of weed (I very rarely buy) but I massively appreciate the smoke-your-own-stash rule. It's free n easy, just as it should be. We got chatting to a seemingly nice local dude but it somehow turned into him offering us hard drugs and... Y'know... That's not cool. That's not why we're here. That's not why ANY of us are here. So we got a bit hostile with him and he got the message, got paranoid and slunk back off into the darkness like the dirty fucker he was. If anyone wants to ask me why we didn't say something to the staff, we asked ourselves the same thing later but realised that it's almost better for people like that to realise they don't have a market in coffeeshops instead being told by the coffeeshops that they can't have a market in there. If that makes any sense. Anyhow, apart from that hick-up, it was a nice chill and a nice way to wrap things up for that lazy day.

We crawled back to our room, smoked most of what we had rest and lulled into slumber.

I'll finish with the final day tomorrow... For now I'm gonna see what's in this letter here. It's got an international stamp on it?? I wonder what it could be

well this was probably my favourite part of the trip report ... the thought of being there roaming the streets and canals for hours was quite refreshing for me this morning with my coffee ... thanks

well done for a nicely written report, it has a good lay-out and it's easy to pick out information about the shops and the varieties, also a good strong narrative thread which makes it easy to read and to enjoy your trip too

looking forward to the final day ...

Day 4

Last day. Early start as we need to check out and my friends have to get to the airport. So we pack up and head to centraal, smoking the remainders of our stash along the way. I see them off and get started with breakfast at my favourite breakfast place in dam, Prins Heerlijk. The address is Prins Hendrikkade 57. Please discover for yourself how great this place is. So now I had a few hours to spend in blissful solitude (with a full stomach) so the order of business was to hit my final coffeeshops. Since I was right there, I started with..

Voyagers (agaaain) - Because it was testing tuesday. Except they didn't do it for some reason. So, confused, I kind of just wandered off without buying anything :?

Paradox - This was my obvious next choice because it's always been one of my favourites and for some reason every time I suggested going, my mates were on a different tangent. So I get there and I'm slightly confused by the new decor, I don't really know why they changed it. But anyway the middle aged male BT , who I've seen before a few times, was really friendly and helpful. I had a look at the wash because the finger hash wasn't on the menu. I got two €12/0.8g bags and sat down for a smoke on the bench outside because the sun had just come out. It was great as usual. Quite a strong sativa high but still mellow enough to allow you to melt into your seat. The taste isn't remarkable but nice and the hash itself is rock solid. After that joint the wash "fell" into my suitcase, not to be seen again until on home soil. Woops.

1e Hulp - Time was of the essence and I was only down the road from my second favourite coffeeshop so it was obvious what to do next. The place was practically empty save for a group of girls my age upstairs and two locals playing pool. I had a look at a few of the ices and settled with a gram of the lemon ice for €24 on the recommendation of the BT. She wasn't the friendliest of people but she was helpful enough. Unfortunately she also recommended the lavender which I obligingly got a gram of for €12. Bit of a mistake. In fact the only regrettable purchase of the trip. It smelt and looked nice but the taste was pretty poor. I'm quite sure it wasn't flushed and the ash was almost completely black. I was unhappy about that but I was also stoned and subsequently feeling pretty non-confrontational. So I rolled up a spliff of the lemon which was much nicer. I rolled it with tobacco so the taste didn't come through all too well but it definitely had a long and calming effect. To me the definition of a hybrid high actually because I was still motivated to get up and leave after a while. I do love hanging out there in the upstairs bit with the cat peacefully snoozing next to me. Shame I couldn't stay longer but I had more roaming to do.

That was the last coffeeshop I went to. I really liked just walking about with my headphones on, experiencing the scenery one last time. Always a bit of a bittersweet moment, that. I strolled through waterlooplein market admiring the wacky trinkets but I only had a couple of euros left. Next time. It eventually occurred to me that I had been walking around for about two hours, just taken by the moment, and I only had about 45 minutes before I needed to catch a train to the airport. For some reason I hadn't hung out there the whole trip so it felt right that my last stop was Cafe Batavia (plus it's right by the station - win/win). So I settled down with a beer and the final joint of the trip - the remaining lavender with some lemon ice to cover up the taste. The rest of the iceolater must also have slipped into my bag. Woops again. Nice calm end to an awesome holiday. As always, I was a bit devastated to leave.

So now I'm back in the UK for a couple of weeks before heading back to Malawi. I'm allowed to take my next three week holiday in May/June and I'm quite sure I'll be spending 5 days to a week in dam, probably solo. I'd really like the freedom of solitude and also I need to visit the places I missed this time around. Hopefully I'll be out there while some of you are because it'd be cool to meet some ACDers this time, maybe do a few T&Ts. Who knows.

Great write-up, thanks for taking the time!! You've piqued my interest about the acupulco gold @ amnesia, hope they have it in stock when I get to town.
