Re: Should tourists give up going to the dam ...
Well, I'm a tourist and I'm not giving up going to the dam as long as it's legal for me to buy and smoke there. The day they make it illegal for me is the day they'll never get another tourist dollar from me as I'll never set foot in Amsterdam again at that point. I want my memories of the dam to be my memories of Amsterdam being the wonderful free city it has been for so long. I'll never go to Amsterdam on some sad stroll nostalgic for the good old days if they strip the town of the liberties that have made it such a fun and great place to visit. I don't want my memories tainted with a trip like that. I have at least one more trip of fun and free Amsterdam coming up in March, and more great memories in the making, albeit a little hazy.
I come in peace. Take me to your pizza!

Fucking lawmakers. I think it's time we create laws that restrict how many new laws lawmakers can create. Too much law is the enemy of freedom.

Absolutely, all (cannabis) tourists should go to Washington or Colorado where it's legal, sort of... the Feds could "legally" arrest people, but so far haven't, and probably won't.
If canna-tourists were to stop visiting Mokum in such numbers as to have a significant impact, hopefully then shop prices might reflect something resembling a reasonable set of prices, and not "let's fleece stoner tourists" with jacked up prices.
Before I'm bitch slapped, I do understand overhead.... more importantly though, as a grower I know how much a gram of weed costs to produce. With this knowledge, I can assure everyone that stoners are being fleeced, regardless whether by growers/distributors/coffee shops, and are happy to be fleeced. Why shouldn't they, they are under the influence of drugs. Hmm, now that's a fresh perspective, NOT!
Ok, I've said my peace, now it's time for all the cowardly haters to swoop down from the rafters or come crawling up from under the bridge...

I agree that the prices in Amsterdam are now bordering on ridiculous, I've watched them go from 12eu for top shelf to 15+ in a relatively short space of time , however I still pay it somewhat happily because of the feeling of freedom and unique atmosphere. I can stay at home and smoke my own for a couple of quid a gram but I still like to spend a few days a year in dam.

I'm in for at least one more trip.
There must have been a door there in the wall when I came in.

What new laws are these exactly, I know about some shops having to close due to schools etc.
Are they making a total ban or something??

Really?!? You lot are gonna just stop going to this beautiful metropolis because a couple of coffeeshops are closing?? That's insane. Firstly, the dutch government is not going to ban weed at any point in the near (or distant) future and secondly, even if it did, Amsterdam has a whole lot more to offer than just sitting around on your ass getting stoned. I think it's a pity that the only attraction for some of you is the weed.
Also maybe consider the fact that people who live in Europe may not have the money to simply go to Colorado or Washington (or whichever state legalises it next) instead, simply for the sake of drug tourism. PLUS those places don't have coffeeshops yet and probably won't anytime soon.
Call me crazy but I'll be staying loyal to my favourite city in spite of whatever senseless laws get passed, thank you very much.

I love Amsterdam. I love the canals, I love the sound of Dutch, I love the brown cafes and so much more. But you know what? You can get beautiful canals in Strasbourg or Bruges. You can hear Dutch in Antwerp or Ghent and find all sorts of local charm in Belgium or France or Denmark or Germany or Austria, etc. And you can do it a lot cheaper than in Amsterdam(well, maybe not in Denmark. But still.) There are a lot of restaurants I love in Amsterdam, but it can't compare to Paris or Lyon or Barcelona or Florence or San Sebastian. I like the museums but it's nothing compared to Berlin or Paris or London or Madrid.banshee beat wrote:Really?!? So why have I visited Amsterdam dozens of times whereas I've visited most other spots only 2 or 3 times? Because of the coffeeshops; because the Netherlands is the only place in the world where I can go up to a counter, ask for a menu, buy some bud and a coffee, and enjoy a peaceful, social smoke while chatting and watching the world go by. Even in Colorado, you have to illegally smoke on the street or return to your hotel/apartment to smoke. If the coffeeshops were closed to foreigners, everything that made Amsterdam such a unique destination would be gone. I would have no reason, on my next trip to Europe, to stop in Amsterdam instead of Brussels or Lyon or Copenhagen or hundreds of other equally charming cities I don't know as well as Mokum.
And I would also feel slighted. I've always been a model guest in Amsterdam: I'm polite and respectful. I patronize local businesses and museums and am happy to donate to local causes. And from my experience, most pot-smoking tourists are the same(with some exceptions of course.) To be treated then as vermin to be gotten rid of, by politicians who speak of "drug tourists" with a sneer is infuriating. And quite frankly, I wouldn't like to spend money in a country that views me and people like me as sub-human or a nuisance.

You're arguing against nobody. The freedom of the coffeeshop scene is (as we both pointed out) completely unrivalled and - here's the thing that makes this whole thread entirely moot - it's not going anywhere. The weitpass failed, and nothing like it is going to have the support to work in the future. End of.Yossarian22 wrote:I love Amsterdam. Also, for the record, I do actually prefer Amsterdam to all those other places anyway which is why, as I mentioned, I'd keep coming back. Probably just not as often.
