decades of pure joints, pipes and volcano never really got into bongs.

my question - why is the glass so darn expensive?

Is it really THAT good to warrant those prices?

What do you look for in purchasing a bong? (what makes a good one as opposed to a bad one?)

Also curious as I smoked for the first time in late 1967. I've done all of the above and edibles, but never a bong! The hookah experiment was a bust so I abandoned that path.

Wondering if it is all about taste?

Quality Bongs are Made in Germany, USA...
And NOT in India, China, Pakistan..
It is all about the thickness and quality of the Glass/- cuts. Good bongs are made from Brosilicate glass.
A Quality Bong is really stable and doesn´t get broken so fast.
Good German manufacturers are Roor and Smile.
Cheape china glass bongs cost about 20€.
I think that isn´t expensive.
But yes, quality cost a lot.

Because its a trade. A persons sweat and tears. Can't be mass produced. For instance:

This is an artist, (quite a cool one). from my mind a whole different level - no matter what he was producing.

But do you consider a roor to be on the same level as a pipe like this for quality of smoking?
I assumed perhaps wrongly that most bongs were poured and molded and not hand blown.

Yes I would say that is an incorrect assumption. All glass has to be blown and assembled by hand. Sure they have a factory and tools to make it efficient, but it will never be like robots welding together your Toyota.

As far as quality of smoking.... Design of the glass is what dictates that. The better the design the better the smoke. I just have plane jane 18inch roor. Its a tool. The right tool for the job. Pretty glass cant smoke much, if any better IMO... Then again I never hit a $1,000 pipe either... If I want art ill go to the Louvre.
