May 21-2Something

Coming back to Amsterdam for my 2nd trip, late May of this year. First trip was in January of 2013, huge fun but didn't get to see and experience much of what I wanted to except the Centrum bars and coffeeshops. This upcoming trip is going to be much different. Staying in an apartment in the West part of the city, near Erasmus Park, with the nearest coffeeshop being the Loft. Instead of going with one of my best "party it up friends", I'll be coming with a good girl friend. She can actually party (drink and smoke) as professionally as about any one else I know but she's also motivated to see museums, historical sights, and towns outside of Amsterdam (Haarlem?).

I only had about 10 days to plan my first trip to Amsterdam but, luckily, I found ACD beforehand and was able to do fairly well with my coffeeshop adventures despite my traveling companion being a non-toker. This second trip is going to be much different. As my lady friend is a toker, one who can hold her own, and having months to plan the trip instead of days; my goal is to see, smoke, eat, and drink anything and everything possible for 6-7 days.

I'm probably going to come back here to this thread to ask questions or update our plans/situation prior to our trip.

For now, I'd like to address one specific thing we'd like to see/experience. We love music. We are really looking forward to seeing the orchestra at the Concertgebouw. After that though, we like to get down like the "kids". We're both right at 30 years old but I love a good musical festival and EDM is something we both can enjoy. Can any locals here (or people in the know) recommend a specific show or festival going on in Amsterdam during the time we will be there, May 21-26? Or a good website for information? Thank you and take care,

Welcome to the forum.

You have been posted on the May Whos In Town page.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

If you don't see yourself, click your refresh or reload button
Your browser sometimes loads pages from your local cache and
you don't get the latest update.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

Set yourself up with your own T&T or Toke and Talk, where you pick the coffeeshop (your favorite)
and the date and time, I will post it and you wait for folks to show up, if they do you'll have a
T&T. If they don't you still get to enjoy your favorite coffeeshop!

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

A trip to Haarlem is always fun. You get to experience a little different coffeeshop scene.
It is a 15 minute, 7,60 euro return ticket train ride.

Haarlem coffeeshop map.

http://thekaart.nl/en-netherlands-haarl ... 179_0.html

Birdy is my personal favorite shop in Haarlem.

If the queue at the Anne Frank house is too much for you, see the Corrie Tenboom house in Haarlem.

If weather is on your side, rent a bike at the station and ride through the dunes to Zaandvort, another town on the beach with a couple coffeeshops.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Any with arrows are less than six months old.

Any nice new menu pictures you can get will be much appreciated.
Always ask first, better told no than thrown out.

Enjoy

We are really looking forward to the trip to Haarlem, thank you for the coffeeshop map and suggestion! I am a huge fan of cannabis but I also love history so the museum recommendations are appreciated as well. We are planning on going to the beach, weather permitting, but I am curious- is it a beach where people swim and sunbathe when the temperature is warm enough? I would gladly bring my swimsuit

I happened to randomly run into a fellow ACDer on my first trip. My friend and I were staying at the Green House Effect so we took advantage of the Bar for hotel guests and that's where we met up with cofblizz. His travel partner had backed out at the last minute so he was traveling solo. Pretty sure he was glad to meet us :D

It'd be pretty cool to meet some more ACDers so closer to our arrival time I'll be looking for a TnT we might be able to join. Amsterdam was a very warm and inviting atmosphere (despite the January weather). I'm very much anticipating an ever better experience on this next trip.

Thank you for the response, Fly by Night!

oh people definitely sunbath! And they go into the water (at least a hearty few)-- but it IS the North Sea! I put my feet in the water in August and could not believe how cold it was! So I would think May would have a bit of a breeze -- not certain if the full beach thing is going on in May (they have tented food and drink places, beach chairs, pretty festive and organized etc)
Have a great time!

We'll still try and make it to the beach for sightseeing and consuming food, drink, and cannabis but probably not sunbathing  We will have a great time regardless, thank you!

We'd love to do/see something particularly "Nederlands". I notice we are arriving just a few weeks after the last Ajax match which bums me out. There is nothing like taking in the energy and spirit that comes during a local sporting event. If anyone has an alternative suggestion, I'm all ears. Take care,

I've been doing research on the neighborhood our apartment is in, the Turkish neighborhood, and I've found the coffeeshops nearest to us. I already mentioned CS The Loft is nearby, just around the corner, but the closest is actually CS Happiness. Its a very short walk from our place but the reviews aren't the best. I'll probably give it a shot because it is so close but I'm thinking somewhere else will need to be our "home base" for smokin' and chillin'. As far as well reviewed coffeeshops go, 1e Hulp is probably the best and closest at 15-20 minute walk away. After reading so many good things, I am really looking forward to getting to know this place and their products very well. If anyone cares to share firsthand knowledge of this area and/or these coffeeshops, all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Also, as our trip gets closer, I am trying to make concrete plans of the sights and sounds we'd like to experience. We have planned out our day to Haarlem and Zandvoort, our museum day is planned out, and a trip to Zaanse Schans has been planned as well. The only other activity, as of right now, that needs to be figured out and planned is our concert/festival fix. I'm still not able to find exactly what we're looking for. There's a DJ that plays regularly in Amsterdam, Quinten 909. If you are familiar with him, that's the style we're looking for. One of my fav tracks- https://soundcloud.com/quinten909/dusty ... eld-spooky

We are very excited!!! The art, history, and unique experience the Netherlands offers is dominating my thoughts everyday. Less than 2 months from now, I'll be taking it all in again, can't wait!!!

We have bikes! We get two with our apartment rental so we have them to use whenever we like. I'm an avid cyclist but my partner not so much. I can't freakin wait to try out Amsterdam's biking paths, heaven compared to what I have here in the USA.

This is up my alley and I had not heard of it until now, thank you so much! I think we'll be able to make time to see it.

I'm glad to see a personal endorsement for this shop, the Loft's ACD page is pretty sparse. Looks like we should be confident making stops at this coffeeshop.

MARKETS! I loved walking through the Albert Cuyp market, it was one of my favorite parts of my trip last year. We would love to find more markets in May. Flea market, antiques, vintage clothing, foods and drinks... Really any kind of market. If anyone knows of a website or other resource that lists the different markets, their locations, and when they are open; I'd be grateful if you'd point me in the right direction. Thanks again and again, take care.
