Quiet, stealthy vent
Does anyone have any reccos for a good silent-ish vent fan? Or any tips on making a bloody loud one a bit less so?

build a sound proof box around it and use insulated ducting.
what kind and size of fan is it? If your that worried you can get a silencer but they really do kill your airflow and space!

i use and inline fan to remove hot air from my computer room and it can be loud enough to hear from the street if the window is open, which it normally is or it can be heard out the exhaust vent anyway as it is much smaller square brick vent out of the building wall, this being smaller than the outtake itself causes a whistling humming noise.

Vortex S-line inline fan, and a speed controller all you need. Always want max venting like max light so just turn down the dial for those few times you need stealthy.

Cheers for the tips. Does acoustic ducting have a significant effect or is that just a finger in the dyke?

in my opinion it makes a significant difference, that's what i mean by insulated ducting. length of ducting from fan to exit point makes a difference. Don't ever expect it to be silent though. You need to box it in to dull the noise that much.
With accoustic ducting use 2 ducting clips, one on the normal inline and one round the outside insulation.

Yeah I dont expect silence but I dont want vacuum cleaner level racket either! Was hoping it would be somewhere around the level of one of those big standup fans??

Re: Quiet, stealthy vent
yeah if you are using anything above a 350m3 per hour exhaust or intake they can sound like vacuum cleaners.
speed controlled or environmentally controlled.

Re: Quiet, stealthy vent
One thing to do is to use an inline vent that is one or two "sizes" larger than your requirement and then slow that baby down using a switching transformer. Don't use a dimmer like you would for ceiling lights, these can cause a nasty humming sound in the vent. You can get these VERY silent.

Re: Quiet, stealthy vent
try hanging the fan using bungee cordes i find this takes alot of the vibration noise away ( try hanging one with string/cable ties then try bungee cordes you will notice a difference straight away)
