This really is tragic news...I only found this gem a couple of years ago and it was always good to see DC and sign the book. Its become a regular haunt.

SO what is the future, Im guessing it will become a bar? Are you staying on mate?? If you are we will still pop in for a beer to say high! IF youre moving on keep us updated mate I for one will come and find you :D

My 420 plans will have to be seriously rejigged :-(

Yeah, hmmm...still not by the shellshocked side of things yet. Apart from the fact the next 3 planned years of life have effectively been scrubbed due to the personal whim of a muppet. The thing that grates the most is the other fact a coffeeshop license will just vanish into thin air, puff...gone, which sucks cos say what ya like about the Nes itself, the weed was...is...good and a decent price. I'll be staying with the Nes crowd for another while yet as they're a good bunch to work for, which is very hard to find in this city. The new bar will go ahead as planned and should open early April, as for the NesCafe, hmmm...not sure yet, weed wise "we'll be taking our work underground". The bar license will stay I presume.....Best case scenario: The owner sees the light (or gets persuaded by the hitman I've dispatched) and changes his mind thus letting us all get kippered on 4/20 in style in an all new Nes. Can't see that happenin though, pardon my french...but, he's a bit of a hypocritical cunt when it comes to morals plus, the hitman had to take a boat due to air sickness. Worst case: It gets a bit of a facelift (why fully sort the place out for a muppet like that) and becomes a very smoker friendly bar with a stoner like me left in charge of things. (Random point: Laws don't have to be broken, but they can be bent well outta shape.) Anyway, nothing is decided yet. I can't see me going to work in another coffeeshop mainly because after working for the Nes and having the luxury of knowin the gear yer sellin is good, it would have to be a good shop I'd go to. I cant and wont sell shit weed to stoners.

As for any changes in the law, it'll have to happen in the next 7 days as the split license changes for everybody have to be applied for 4 weeks in advance of April 1st.

The last month should be interesting, the menu will probably be goin a tad mad all month and I believe we still have 5 24hr licenses to make use of. So Mr and Mrs Woodstock I'll look forward to seein yousins on the 29th..30th...31st...7 to 7?

At the Nes we do our best to makesure everybody that comes through the door enjoys themselves, the way we do it isn't always to everybodies tastes, standards, whatever, but we seem to manage for most. One thing we know is.....Yer fuk all without the customers that come through yer door, we've been very lucky over the years. We've managed to continually get a great bunch of Stoney Malonies from all over the world showin up in front of us. On Behalf of all the Nessers, I'd like to thank you all for helping make it what it is. We'll just have to wait and see what comes next?.

In the meantime, life is good....I'm still alive. :D

Truely a shame, Although I found Nes later on in my trips, I really enjoyed it... always felt welcome, always felt part of the buzz.

Dave, Good luck man whatever you do, I'll be out in may and I'd love to find the same Nes I left last June..... Oh well.

A real shame, Nes has been a firm favourite of mine for some time now, great atmosphere, nice beers and top quality weed at some of the best prices in that part of town.

Good luck with it all Dave, I'm sure things'll work out one way or another, thanks for all the good times :D

I always thought weed licences were transferrable? How did Club Media get permission to use their temporary place? Solely because it's temporary?

It shit bout the Nes closing, my favourite coffeeshop in Amsterdam, always my first stop...where will I go now?!

This all came out of the blue a couple of weeks ago, a surprise to us all. Which is why it's like tryin to swallow a pill encrusted with broken glass. I know this much though, whatever the Nes becomes.....the first twat to get barred is the owner of the building ......and I can't frekkin wait to enforce that one.

Plus, all you folks I've already met, law shmaw, while ya wont be able to buy weed across the counter after the change.....you'll all still be stoned before ya finish yer first drink. :D

This is really out of order.
I've been to Amsterdam many times over the years, but have never got round to visiting the famous Nes.
I've heard many superb things about the place and about the (in)famous Dave.
The worst thing is, is that the next time I'm in Amsterdam, will be in May, after the change, and I'm staying at a hotel about 20 metres up the road from Nes!
Arse!

R.I.P. NES - The war of attrition on coffeeshops has conquer one of the finest shops in town. Friendly, warm, and welcoming don't begin to describe the Nes and its inhabitants. My condolences, Dave (And the rest of the gang).

In one month, 20 or so more shops around the city will lose thir coffeeshop license, never to been reinstated. Sadly, the green scene in Amsterdam of today seems to be no more that a shadow of its former self.

Disheartening. I'm glad I got to go there once before the change. I was really looking forward to the Sada Shiva again.

Given that the brewery held the lease, and obviously would prefer all coffeeshop-bars sell alcohol after the split, it's pretty easy to imagine the brewery greased the owner quite nicely to render this favorable ruling.

The margins in an individual coffeeshop-bar might be better on weed, but national and international beer revenues are hard to fight when it's time for payola.

I hope there aren't many coffeeshops tied into similar rental conflicts. And for any that are, I hope they have owners who can stand on principle against some nice windfalls.

jbomb - you suggest that following the license changes 20 more shops will lose their weed license. I know you are one of the best placed people on this forum to comment on this, and just wondered if you knew which other CS's are likely to stop selling weed come april?

I know. I'm compiling my best resources and predictions for the next report. Should be posted in a week.
