Chill shops like Paradox and LaTertulia??
Hi,
I'm coming in May with my wife and would really appreciate any suggestions for "chill shops" like Paradox and LaTertulia. They were my favorites for atmosphere in 2014 and my wife barely uses mj, so need shops with more room to lounge and grab a drink / maybe enjoy some music.
By myself I was most interested in quality bud, but now shops like Grey Area and Voyageurs etc are not going to work well for my wife.
We are staying in SW, a kilometer north of Vondelpark but will have bikes to get around.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi MiniBobber,
I got your PM as well. As far as you tell me, it sounds like you in the missus would benefit from a coffeeshop-crawl of De Pijp area of Amsterdam which lies just south of the centrum (as enclosed by Nassuakade/whatever streets it mutates into as it envelopes the canal-belt in a semi-circle), and just east of Vondelpark/behind the Heineken Brouwerij.
The options are:
(1) De Graal: this one is a mixed crowd of young locals, and old (still local) hippies with the occasional in the know (pot) tourist stumbling in. The shop is open from midday on the weekends, but narrowly missed the ax this new year's for a slated closure (along with a slew of other shops), thus, during the weekdays they are only open from 6PM until the standard coffeeshop closing time of 1AM I believe. They have a great selection of buds, and both import and "nederhashes", and are on the whole reasonably priced for the Amsterdam scene. They have two main smoking rooms; the upper one with garden-terrace view being my personal fave. But to be honest, they all offer great ambience. The last third room, in the back, on the lower floor is a music jam session room, that is open to all willing to proffer their musical talent or prowess to the other patrons (at least in the vicinity). Overall this coffeeshop definitely has the coolest interior in all of Amsterdam CS's in my opinion. Of all of the shops I'll list here, I'd say this one has the highest quality buds.
(2) Katsu: has a sort of similar crowd to De Graal, but with a bit more canna-tourists and "expats" mixed in, still a favorite haunt of local ole Dutch hippies though. They have a great "verdamper" vaporizer in the corner, if you want a potent but health-conscious mode of consumption at your disposal. The interior is also inviting and reminds somewhat of a Dutch "Bruin-cafe" - gezellig. This place offers some great hashes, and usually some pretty good weed for the price, but I am a bit irked that they're one of the shops that subscribes to this pre-bagging of determined quantities, business-model . Plus points it's in a really nice little plaza with a great beer shop, and beautiful Saphrati Park, just a stone's throw away. Of all the shops listed here, this shop has the best hash menu and crowd.
(3) Yo-Yo: this one is run by some old Dutch ladies and looks like it could also be a casual art gallery/and or tea shop. Certainly not a place for smoking anything. The ambience and decor is light, but it gives for a cozy/ but elegant vibe. Supposedly they have quite the lekker appel-taartje here, but I've never come at the right time to sample it. The crowd here is truly a niche of old locals, and the fare on the menu specializes in outdoor-grown buds, so they're not particularly potent, but are also organic-grown typically and come with a friendly price tag. A good place to take the missus I reckon.
BONUS
(*) Mr. K's & CO: this one is located quite close to Paradox, just off the Rozengracht (opposite side from Paradox, and a bit further down aka Westward). Very cool, chic looking decor on inside, only been once but really liked the interior, and was there briefly so didn't get the best feel for the crowd but it didn't seem to be one of those blaring hip-hop type places. The weed is good enough too, I (and other's on here) would recommend the Fallen Angel for a nice heady-indica, with some flavor to pack. Edit to add: went back today. The upstairs smoking room is great, comfortable mat/sofa thing that lets you lay-back with your legs stretched forwards, an outlet and ample comfortable space. Also they had an entire (albeit expensive naturally) menu-section devoted to Devil's Harvest genetics, so another place to consider for quality. Of all shops listed this one has the most comfortable seating.
I hope this helps!

I'll also add, given you location and emphasis on quality:
(1) Boerjongnes West/De Bij: two coffeeshops in quite close proximity to one-another (under same management), have more or less the same menu-a la 2e Kamer & Dampkring 2; allegedly Bij will typically have a few extra indicas on the menu. Both are pick-up only places but offer very high-quality nugs for more than reasonable prices, given the Amsterdam-scene - high-quality from 8.50-9.50 per gram quite regularly gracing the menus (examples would be all any of the hazes, king-kong kush, AK-OG, 24K-OG). Should be located quite close to your accommodations.
(2) Kashmir: Also in Oud West, typically has a good selection of hashes; bonus points a nice chill bar with bongs, volcanoes, comfortable seating and dim, cozy, oriental-themed interior, also the bar is open overy night until 3AM, although I don't know if that really matters to your or not...

Re: Chill shops like Paradox and LaTertulia??
Dank je wel DeLeuksta,
Extremely helpful and great that De Pijp is loaded with good shops!!! I'm playing in an international sports tournament at Sporthal De Pijp so we'll be there a lot.
I am stoked and cannot wait to come back, get a big smile on my face just thinking about it. I am not a fan of cities BUT Amsterdam feels like a village of 800,000---a very good thing. And the apfel taart makes me drool to think about it....
An awesome place to bike everywhere, and be safe. In 2014 I stayed in Nord AMS so we'd take the ferry over to Central Station and I'd bike to De Pijp while my buddy took the tram and I always beat him by 10 minutes. Bikes rule.
And vaporizers--YES. I always vape when possible and am just checking out a small portable vape to bring.
These shops will be great to check out, as well as getting back to LaTertulia and Paradox.
I wish flights from US to AMS were cheaper as I'd like to visit yearly or maybe stay a month next time.
I've been reading AMS travel books and AMS history which fascinates me. Got some old buildings to scout out, like the start of VOC etc

Ha glad I could help a fellow Yank out! Where 'bouts in the US will you be traveling from (edit: perhaps MN, given your ACD-handle)?
Per your closing note and the inception of this thread, I will have to add that overall Paradox is probably the best "chilling" coffeeshop because of location/decor/staff/excessive amount of on-site volcanoes available for use by patrons.
What time of year will you guys be here exactly?

Re: Chill shops like Paradox and LaTertulia??
Yup, Minnesota.
Should be there May 23-30. You there then?
Where in US are you DeLeukste? Sounds like you're in AMS a lot though
Love the Volcanos at Paradox and de Verdamper at LaTertulia. Although the Volcano with its giant chamber is dangerous...
Also trying to find a small boat, cannabis friendly, canal cruise. I found that one used to post at Mikes Bikes, they restored old boats, and it was by donation. Can't place the name right now.

I'm from the US, but currently reside in Amsterdam; so indeed I am here quite a lot!
And thus, yes I'll be here; so keep me posted when your arrival date is more proximate and we can perhaps arrange a meet-up!
Where is La Tertulia by the way? I may have to check it out. Good quality product on the menu? Or more of just a place for chilling?

Re: Chill shops like Paradox and LaTertulia??
La Tertulia is right on Prinsengracht, about 8 short blocks south of Paradox. 2 years ago I had some really nice Amnesia Haze there. Beautiful location to sit out on front patio overlooking canal and watch the world go by. I don't think they allowed smoking on patio though???
2 stories inside. We went upstairs to gaze out the window. They have de Verdamper there which was great--like a big ol science lab experiment and I wouldn't own one for home use but great for vaping. Second floor caution---the wonderful 80 degree narrow stairs to upper level
Mother and daughter owners. Seemed like a lot of locals. It was probably my fav shop---maybe meet up there if you don't mind vaping with a "senior".
Funny story as I dragged my buddy there in 2014 and he had never tried mj, hard to believe. I have him take a few pulls on de Verdamper and ask how he's doing and he replies, " you know, I don't think I really feel anything .......giggle, giggle, giggle". Right....
