What was Amsterdam like in the past?

Post by avfc-herbalist »

Hello fellow Herbalists  I was reading through old travelogues and came across things that shocked me a little bit . Since my first pilgrimage to Amsterdam in 2013 there's been a big change, the closing of the coffeeshops next to schools . But reading back through old travelogues from 2005 onwards I read that barney's used to open 24 hours a day during 420, Dampkring 2 used to have a big drape thing on the side of the building advertising the coffeeshop and you could buy mushrooms, weed and alcohol from the same shop . So it really intrigued me to try and find out what the Amsterdam of the past was like! Can some of you lovely people please share any stories you have, I can imagine it was pretty funny people watching when they had taken mushrooms, smoked some weed and were drinking a beer . Sorry for the long ass post . Thank you :D

There's a thread somewhere, buried in the archives here, titled something along the lines of "Amsterdam stories from the 70s, 80s and 90s", that's an absolute goldmine of anecdotal accounts, I highly recommend you dig for that, definitely worth the read!

Thanks for the reply  I'll definitely dig deep to try and find that thread! Seems to be exactly what I'm looking for lol. I have tried to search for things like that in the past in the search bar but it's quite hard to use lol. Thanks for the help mate

I found this one: Oldest and craziest memories of trips from 80s and 90s

I'd love to read some more of these. I'm sure there are more topics like this somewhere but it's not easy to find them. The forum is an enormous archive these days!

Right up in the top-right corner of this page there is a Google search. Sometimes this works better than the forum search but you still need to guess some keywords to search for.

It would be great to have some means of indexing the archive. There are some brilliant articles in here but they get lost amongst more ephemeral stuff. To some extent the sections (forums in PHPBB parlance) help with this. For instance, Travel Plans are great but, once the trip has happened, they rarely remain interesting. Travelogues, on the other hand, can often be a great read even if they're very old. That's why I encourage people to stick to the before and after in their posting.

@lemmy that's the one to which I was referring. Much obliged, good sir!

This might not be what you meant but well worth relating to you anyway. I am just finishing the audio version of this book.

' Russell Shorto traces the evolution of one of the world's greatest cities. From the building of its first canals in the 1300s, through the brutal struggle for Dutch independence and its golden age as the capital of a vast empire, to its complex present in which its cherished ideals of liberalism are under siege, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually entertaining story of Amsterdam. '

What was Amsterdam like in the past you ask? How far back do you want to go?

Lemming - Thanks for taking the time to find that thread for me, it's very much appreciated :D. I'm going to enjoy reading through those stories, that thread is exactly what I was looking for lol. Thank you mate! I've sort of managed to work out the search bar now after having a play this afternoon. I go into advanced search and change the search to topic titles rather than posts and it thins the threads out quite nicely.

DeLeuksteNUGS16 - Thank you for your help man, you seem to help everyone you can on this forum. Thanks for your knowledge mate!

Ed the head - Now this has intrigued me! What's the audio book like? Sorry to ask a silly question but is it in English or Dutch lol? I'm interested in this book now because I know the Dutch helped the British build their canals so it would be interesting to hear how the Dutch thought of such a concept. I'd like to hear about their empire as well. Thank you for the link!

Hey Lemming, hope all is well with you. What do you mean by sticking to the before and after when posting? I'm back in dam at the end of July / early August and was planning on doing another trip report.

I too feel that the travelogues are always a great read. On the way to work some mornings I select a random page in the Travelogue section and just read away. Really get lost in the moment!

Can I offer you this for a possible reading list. http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2011/ ... -amsterdam
A favourite of mine is "The brief History of Amsterdam" by Geert Mak. Did you know that Rembrandt spent his later years sketching in the city and died almost penniless and buried in a paupers grave? This is a fascinating book and an easy read for a stoney afternoon.

As far as latter years are concerned, my first visit was as a very young sailor in 1964 but hadn't been introduced to the herb then. My memories from 52 years ago are I'm afraid somewhat hazey (pun intended). But I was aware that there was plenty about. As this was pre coffeeshop and pre hippy, although the colonial backpackers had discovered the place :D, all the herbs and hash was in the Seamans bars some of which later became coffeeshops, De Kuil/420 and Black Star are two I remember from later on. And of course in those days it was the sailors bringing it in so it was all good gear imported from scource. I remember no domestic stuff then.
Back then Amsterdam was the docks and the docks were Amsterdam, I remember coming down the gangway in the Ooosterdock, crossing the Prinz heindrikkade and bang you where right in among it. I reckon the Redlight district was twice the size in those days. And of course it was a major trans shipment hub for the European Barge transport, I remember the Damrak before they filled three quarters of it in being packed with barges form all over north, east and southern Europe. A lot of change in my watch. :D
What a long strange trip it is.

I just meant that people generally post in Travel Plans before a trip and in Travelogues during or after. This is helpful because Travel Plans are generally where we get involved live whereas Travelogues can remain a good read for years after.

I'm struggling to find a 1960s_70s map cos I swear there has been a fair bit of waterways filled in.

Oh heres one for the real fans of the city and the totally deranged. :D

That other thread is superb and deserves a bump. I shall be adding some of my own tales of the old city now... :D
