Hangouts for "Veterans"

Post by Weldon »

Hello Again...(It's been a long time!) Any recommendations on coffeehouses that cater to a clientele who's been smoking since the 60's or 70's? When I was in Amsterdam last year for the first time in 10 years, I felt a little out of place as the old guy in the college bar. I was in the Centrum a lot and will be again when we find ourselves in there again on Tuesday. Any place in particular that the Deadheads gravitate towards?

It will be my 9th visit, but for "The Farmer", it will be her first. Thanks for your help. 8)

De Graal, Katsu, Yo-Yo, and Paradox all seem to a least partially cater to old-timer locals/regulars although beware that there will naturally also be yutes about in said establishments that is more or less something which is inevitable - maybe if you can get access to De Bommel, they kind of act as a private club and typically only let in old, local Dutchies as far as I understand - also their specialty is Moroccan hash fwiw, so take that into account, hope this helps

De Graal would be the most "dead-heady" of any coffeeshop if I had to call it!

DeLeukste nailed it.

Paradox is A+. There were times that at age 40, I was the youngest in there.

La Tertulia is A+, too. Good mix, but the younger clients (20s and 30s) are obviously a bit more mature playing Risk and whatnot. The owners will be in their late 50s to 60s, and they are always there. They don't talk much other than the boyfriend of the one owner (he sells geodes at Noordermarkt and will chat with you about them if interested).

Yo-Yo is a solid A. Rent a bike and ride down Prinsengracht, hang a left on Utrectstraat. Stop and say hello to Jimmy at Ki-Boots. Then down the left-hand of the Y at Fredricksplein to Yo-Yo. Great area for hanging out. 15 min. bike ride from Jordaan, and 20 min. if you stop to say hi to Jimmy.

You cannot go wrong with any of those shops.

Thanks very much. I remember going to Katsu, just off Albert Cuypmarkt. They always had great product. We'll definitely be heading out that way. I don't think I've been to any of the other ones. Used to always hit DeKuil just after getting in. I mistakenly thought they were out of business when I was in last year. Has anyone been there lately?

Thanks again for all your help. We're in from Tuesday to Saturday. Hope we have nice weather.
