23rd - 25th September - tributes, music, boating, and hashish

Hi guys,

Just stumbled across this excellent resource, because after a few years off, I'm going to Amsterdam in a couple of weekends' time. Less than a fortnight to go, and really looking forward to it. There's three of us going, all old school friends. The background to our trip is sadly one of our number passed away last year so this trip is a kind of tribute to him. He loved getting caned in Amsterdam, and loved Hill Street Blues, so we'll be making a special pilgrimage there on the Friday, which is the day after what would have been his 35th birthday. I might try and hide a cherished photo of him, taken in HSB itself, under the seat or some such place where it's unlikely to be found for years. A graf tribute is also a possibility.

Having said all that, we're there to enjoy ourselves, so I've been sketching up a vague plan, inspired by some of the fantastic trip reports on here. I can see we're actually amateur league when it comes to cannabis appreciation and expertise. I've never heard of a "dab" before coming here, for instance, so that's something that needs to be tried. I believe the Cannabis College is the place to go for a practical demonstration.

I'm a musician so I'd like to catch some live music if possible. I know about Paradiso and the Melkweg, but there's nothing on over the weekend that particularly takes my fancy, and it's a big risk to spend a communal €75 on something highbrow we might not like, or be too stoned to appreciate. I was wondering if anyone has been to the CC Muziek Cafe, particularly on a Friday night? I can't work out what goes down on a Friday from their website. On the Saturday they've got blues and rock for €5 which is exactly what I'm looking for.

Following a suggestion on here, I'm keen to get a boat from Boaty.nl on the saturday afternoon - it seems to me that getting lost on the canals, laid back in one's own vessel, is a considerably more appealing and memorable prospect than doing the same on the streets. All I need to do is draw up a list of canalside coffeeshops with rear entrances! I think Hill Street Blues is one, any other suggestions?

Weed-wise, I'm more of a hashish fan, perhaps with a side order of some sort of Sativa. I prefer a head high than something deep and anaesthetising. So I'm after some nice quality hashish, and it seems that Boerejongens is a good option for that, and considering their central shop is just over a canal from where we're staying, that's a definite on the list. In fact, in that little quarter just south of Amstel there's some rich pickings - Bushdocter, Smokey, Balou, and a few alcohol bars, because yes, we drink too.

I can see there's already a diary crossover with another ACD'er, so there's always the chance of a meet-up too. It's gonna be a blast!

Hasta la bifta!

You have been posted on the September Whos In Town page. Scroll down to your month and click it.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

If you don't see yourself, click your refresh or reload button
Your browser sometimes loads pages from your local cache and
you don't get the latest update.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

Set yourself up with your own T&T or Toke and Talk, where you pick the coffeeshop
(your favorite) and the date and time, I will post it and you wait for folks to
show up, if they do you'll have a T&T. If they don't you still get to enjoy your
favorite coffeeshop!

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Any with arrows are less than six months old.

Any nice new menu pictures you can get will be much appreciated.
Always ask first, better told no than thrown out.

So am I, so I'd certainly recommend Boerejongens. But I'd avoid the rest, at least as far as product is concerned; some years ago I had a coffee in Smokey without buying anything else, but not sure if that's officially their policy. As for the Rembrandt Square bars, no idea, but there's certainly lots of choice, and they're open quite late (as I grumbled to myself when having to wander around the canals for a late-night smoke when staying at a very non-smoking hotel – why do only drinkers get to stay out late?).

Second the recommendations from FOD, also big hash fans the both of us and Boer for sure is #1, but would also skip the rest on the list at go for tweede and dampkring in addition to Boer for top hash, maybe add easy times to the list as it should be close also and has a very decent overall selection and is a great and roomy shop for a little group! :) sad to break the news to you, but HSB is on longer a CS but is now a smokers friendly bar (hill street booze), but still very much ok to hang in he you can hack the somewhat pushy service from the staff and the general clientele, love your idea of going there to remember your friend!

Wrt the boat trip you should probably tro and get one of those with the solar panel roofs that they have at boaty.nl as the weather might be a little unpredictable at that time. Would recommend also that you take a big stash to go so you don't have to rely on getting stuff at shops from the boat, which is for sure a fun idea to try a few times, but would probably quickly turn into quite a hassle if you have to do it many times. There are definitely shops canalside (although we can't remember one that has an "entrance" like hill street), easy times and amnesia to name two, but despite what some might tell you it isn't entirely unproblematic to get from the boat and to the street in the canal belt and other places. It is by no means impossible, but you most likely will have to either skip over a houseboat or two, or climb a rather steep ladder that in most cases are not meant for that use, but only for emergencies, or so wevtranslated the Dutch signs on them anyways...

The water hole at Leidseplein usually has live music on weekends, at least used to be smokers friendly and generally a fun place if you don't mind the festive decorations on a few of the guests vests...

For the hands down gawddang best smokers bar / hangout / place to get your grub on while still being able to toke up / place with the most awesome canal side smokers lounge look no further than Batavia! Managed by 4th degree black belt in "niceguyrate" Simon of legendary NES fame it has a lovely staff, great beers both local and imported top ringers, awesome food for the price and location and maybe the best clientele in the city! Go there and you risk being stuck for most of your day and night! :D Man do we wish of could walk in there when they open in a few hours, order a couple of beef and la choufe (sp?) pies, grab two egg whites and head downstairs for an all day session...

Have a great trip dude!

Absolutely awesome advice, thanks a bunch, CopenhagenCouple. Yep, we got the boat with the roof so we're fine if it's a bit damp. Good call on Easy Times, that's just down the road. Trying to organise a T&T on Sat night, but if it doesn't work out it's just going to end up a nice crawl from one place to the next. Thanks again!
