Introduction

Post by resojo »

Hi everybody. I just registered last night & was accepted maybe earlier today. I'm an American that grew up in Asheville, NC (cool city with lots of microwbreweries). I moved to France from Nashville, TN in 2002, but the whole time I've lived here, I haven't been back to Amsterdam..... I visited Amsterdam back in 1992 when I was on one of those 10 countries in two weeks kind of tours. We spent one night in Amsterdam and left the following morning. While my mother and the rest of the tour group were in the diamond factory, I slipped across the road to the Bom Shankar Coffee shop (I see that it is closed now unfortunately) & bought some really nice Nepalese hash and some sort of skunk bud. Then, stoned as hell, I proceeded to buy some stinky cheese at a specialty shop & got back on the bus. The smell of that cheese was so strong that people started complaining!  Then we went to the Floriade...

My next trip to Amsterdam in 1994 was much better. I was staying in Germany for two weeks and the girl that was with me got sick, Crohn's Disease episode so I had to take her to the airport. I decided at this point to take a detour, drive to Amsterdam & spend 3 days getting blitzed out of my mind. I didn't have a reservation or anything, but the first thing I did upon driving into Amsterdam was park and find a coffee shop. I went to this place called The Challenger, bought some thai stick and was so fucked up that it took me over an hour to find where I parked my car   Great trip...I stayed at the City Hotel Amsterdam.

Fast forward to today...I'll be in Amsterdam tomorrow night (plane is getting in at 10:05 P.M.) and I'm leaving on Friday morning. I'm looking forward to seeing some museums, eating some great food, drinking some nice brew and smoking some kind bud and hash the whole time. I'll be alone, so meeting up with some like-minded people would be cool.

Quick question: Does anybody have some suggestions on bars or music venues where they have jams? I don't plan on bringing an instrument, but I play guitar, mandolin, dobro & I sing.

Welcome, do you still live in France or are you back in the states? What type of music do you like to play, blues, bluegrass, rock, classical? Let us know if you find a good jam bar

Welcome to the forum.

You have been posted on the November Whos In Town page. Scroll down to your month and click it.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

If you don't see yourself, click your refresh or reload button
Your browser sometimes loads pages from your local cache and
you don't get the latest update.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

Set yourself up with your own T&T or Toke and Talk, where you pick the coffeeshop
(your favorite) and the date and time, I will post it and you wait for folks to
show up, if they do you'll have a T&T. If they don't you still get to enjoy your
favorite coffeeshop!

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Any with arrows are less than six months old.

Any nice new menu pictures you can get will be much appreciated.
Always ask first, better told no than thrown out.

Enjoy

M'jellos dude and welcome!

We and quite a few other ACD'ers are around this week (we touchdown Thursday), so you might have luck catching a few around! Check into Utopia, Voyagers and (especially) Batavia for a high chance of running into a ACD... On Thursday evening it will be almost 100 % that we will end up there for a few hours of madness. :)

Have a great trip!

Thanks WillJay - I still live in France and plan on staying. I'm about to go through a divorce and that's part of the reason I'm doing this Amsterdam trip. My wife is a hard ass,lol.... she knows I smoke, but it's something I don't do around her or my son.... actually, if it wasn't for my son, I'd probably be moving back to the states.

As far as music, I play all the styles you mentioned plus Americana, singer/songwriter stuff, some country, a little jazz, etc. I guess I forgot to mention that my first instrument was the drums. I played in a Grateful Dead cover/ jam band back around 89-91. Our biggest gigs were opening for Widespread Panic & a Pro-Legalization Norml Hemp Rally in front of the Courthouse in Asheville, NC. So, I have been a supporter of legalization for quite a long time.

Thanks! I'll definitely check those places out. I was in Copenhagen earlier in the year & really enjoyed it. My niece was going to University there for a few months, so we visited her one weekend... cool city! Take care & maybe we'll run into each other..I'm hard to miss.. a big American guy with long hair (in a ponytail) and a beard.

Coffee Shop De Graal ( highly spoken of by experts here ! ) has a large music room with a stock of instruments out back, don't know about during the week, but Sunday i believe is Jam time there, not good for you this time but a shop worth a visit nonetheless ! - see reviews.
.. in the avoid curve

Thanks for the tip Mike.. this coffee shop has good reviews. This little trip was planned at the end of last week after I had some beers. The next time I'll spend more time in Holland and see more. I've got a friend from high school that teaches English in Hilversum. She mentioned that the prices got better the further you get away from the city center. Her one recommendation was the Piramide in Bussum - http://www.piramidebussum.nl/
That may be a little far though for this trip. Instead I'll probably take a ride out to Haarlem and check out Birdy which was a recommendation I got on the ACD chatroom last night.
