So i have booked flights for £60 return to go to Amsterdam on the 23rd Decemeber and come back on the 27th.

I mean at £60 I just had too :D

Has anyone else spent actual Xmas in Amsterdam?

Do the coffeeshops close on Xmas day etc? i.e I need to stock my hotel room up with food and drugs etc to survive?

Is it totally mental as I've read before about fireworks being randomly let off?

i arrived on xmas day 2016 and stayed past news years. It was great and wonderful. Everything one needs was readily available.
Have a wonderful time. New Years is quite the experience if you can extend your trip....do it!

I don't remember much at all being shut on Xmas Day -- certainly less than in the UK. Some places are closed, but lots of things are open, including coffeeshops. There's even public transport.

dress in layers. lots of layers and you will be fine. Not great bike riding weather for us no accostomed to biking in frigid winds. But it still was absolutely lovely. Everything was open xmas day.

It's generally just as cold in the UK as well, and there's a distinct lack of coffeeshops to nip into to revive your joie de vivre. Where would you rather be rained on?

As for the fireworks madness, that's pretty much New Year's Eve, so you're safe. I've done both, and Xmas is infinitely better. But then I'm not a great NYE fan anywhere.

I understand the Dutch celebrate Christmas on Dec 5th, so the 24th/25th is a non-event. No?

That's not Christmas, it's Sint Niklaas.
