what to expect.......

Post by t-dub »

so my wife, my brother and i are leaving for amsterdam(first timers) on tues. may 15th which is just right around the corner. i have to say i am mostly excited, but also a little intimidated(spelled right?) and a little overwhelmed with thoughts of what to expect. my brother and i are long time smokers and can't wait to get our hands on everything we can and my wife is a light smoker but totally cool with the fact that me and my brother are total stoners. what i am getting at is, if any experienced 'dam goers read this, maybe a brief summary of what we are in for and can expect. i cant wait, omfg it's going to be fun. we have six days there.

Read and heed S G Collins How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam, A great intro to Amsterdam site.
If you give me the dates of your trip, I will post it on the Whos In Town page.

That guide that FlyByNight has posted is essential reading imo!

We had our first trip recently and I must admit we did have the same reservations... we found it a little unnerving at first but you soon learn to just go with it... what I will say is that for a city full of stoned tourists it's designed terribly with all the trams and bikes waiting round corners to jump out at you (that's how it felt at least) but providing you keep your wits about you for that very reason you will have an excellent experience.

It was a huge culture shock for us, a huge culture shock ... you sorta feel like a giant because everything is so small, also neon lights don't make much of an appearance anywhere here, except the occasional one in the window of a chinese or kebab house, whereas in 'dam they are everywhere in the touristy bits... exceedingly tacky. I was also totally expecting the dudes to be walking by offering harder stuff, but they practically sing to you, I looked at my girl, she looked at me and we both literally burst into laughter in the middle of the street, we had to prop ourselves up against a wall on W/straat... "Charlie, cocaine, charlie, cocaine... eeeeeeecstaaaacy". I just melted into fits of laughter

One thing I will say, is start with the cheaper buds and work your way up  I didn't heed that advice and was slapped on my ass "quicker than a rabbit gets fucked", nothing bad... just was taken by surprise!

And if you're anything like us, be prepared to come home considerably heavier than when you left hahahaha... where there's a collection of coffeeshops you can be damn sure there's about 3 bakeries on each corner waiting to lure you in with an array of munchies I can't say I've seen the likes of in my life... I have a dutch friend, who resides in belgium atm, he came through to visit us... we went out for some drinks/smokes and on walking by a bakery it was bound to happen, we popped in... he handed my girlfriend E50 and uttered the immortal line "just get one of everything!!!!" hehehe...

Our first night we were totally bushed, musta crashed out about midnight after a few beers and smokes in the Greenhouse Effect bar. I woke about 3am, very briefly, to hear some American lassie outside calling to her friend "Heyyyyyy maaaaaaan, have you tried the waaaaaafllles??? THEY'RE AMAAAAAZING" ;-)

Anyways, that's a whole lot of writing but I know how nervous we were before leaving so I hope I've gone some way to relieving that for you.

Have a good one, smoke one for me ;-)

Oh aye, if you plan on doing a trip report - take a notepad... you really wont remember much of being there at all

My post above is the closest thing to a trip report I can manage, it's about all I remember and we were there 4 nights and 5 days hehehe...

dont make too many promises t-dub.. lol when u get there and start doing your thing and having a great time.. sometimes we can forget what we wanted to do, or start doing something different..there is soo much to do in amsterdam!

my advice to you is find some nice restaurants (lots of great food around) , find some nice bars /coffeeshops to hang out in! do lots of shopping , enjoy the sites and parks and museums.. eat all kinds of shit , including candy, chocolate, baked goods etc...

just live up the amsterdam life.. and DO NOT be in a rush.. enjoy yourself.
