Total smoking ban from 2008

7 June 2007

THE HAGUE – Smoking should be banned throughout the hospitality industry starting July next year. The cabinet will discuss a proposal to this end from Public Health Minister Ab Klink (Christian democrat CDA) on Friday.

Klink said during an emergency debate in Parliament on organ donation on Wednesday that a final decision could take some time. He said that he was still undecided on whether coffeeshops should be included in the ban.

So in addition to cafés, restaurants and canteens at sport clubs, the smoking ban might also come into effect at coffeeshops at the same time. Separate smoking areas may be provided, but there can be no service in those areas.

Klink wants to move ahead quickly with a ban because of the damage smoking causes to health. There is already a smoking ban in workplaces and this must now be extended to the hospitality industry, he says.

Horeca Nederland, fearing loss in turnover, is urging that a ban be introduced in phases. A spokesperson for the umbrella organisation says the cafés and nightclubs are "not yet ready" for a ban. He wants to wait and hear what the rest of the cabinet thinks of the plan on Friday.

A ban on smoking in coffeeshops was under fire in mid March from a majority in Parliament of Labour PvdA, Socialist SP, Liberal VVD and green-left GroenLinks.

"People go to coffeeshops to smoke, to smoke weed rather. The point of these shops is to limit nuisance from people smoking elsewhere," said PvdA MP Lea Bouwmeester. GroenLinks feared that soft drugs would be pushed into the illegal circuit if smoking were no longer allowed at coffeeshops. But that problem seems to be avoided if coffeeshops may set up a separate smoking area.

The anti-smoking organization Clean Air Nederland is pleased with the "clear decision." But the organization does not think that a separate smoking area is a feasible alternative because employees may still have to perform work in those areas, to clean for instance.

I just dont understand some of these politicians sometimes! How do you ban smoking (tobacco) in a coffeeshop, when the majority of Dutch and other European weed smokers roll their joints with tobacco? We ALL know it is bad for our health and people that really care about that dont usually go into or work in a coffeeshop. Is that so hard for these people to figure out?!! Peace.

They seem to be fighting for it....and for it....but not all at once, which in the end is still for it. I don't understand why the self appointed king of weed hasn't got some swish lawyer on the case to make a legally binding disclaimer form for staff. That, along with a 'private members club' concept for customers would go a long way to gettin round it.

I know this article is on a 'smoking' ban not a 'marijuana' ban...

but....

I've always thought... will I be saying to my kids one day...

"there once was this magical place called Amsterdam where you could buy amazing quality marijuana over the counter at these places called coffeeshops!"

or will they say to me...

"geez, dad... it was nothin' back then... you should see it now!"

Somehow, I believe the second option will eventuate. I hope so.

THE HAGUE – The hospitality industry will be subject to a smoking ban starting July next year. Smoking will still be permitted in coffeeshops, but sales must take place in a smoke-free room.

The government approved a proposal to this end from Public Health Minister Ab Klink during its cabinet meeting on Friday.

Cafes, restaurants, and other venues may still be allowed to provide a screened off area where smokers are allowed to smoke, but no service may be allowed in those areas. Workers must be provided a non-smoking work environment.

The hospitality industry had proposed that a smoking ban only come into effect for restaurants next year, and that a full ban – including cafes and nightclubs – be postponed until 2011. But the cabinet has now agreed to introduce the ban throughout the industry at the same time.

Hmm interesting.

If no service is allowed in these "smoking areas" then what will happen to the tables being cleaned, ashtrays being emptied etc?

Perhaps when you buy a gram the lady behind the counter will give you a bin bag and a cloth to go and collect the empties and clean the tables? Looks like a win win for coffeshop employees. My tip rate might well go down though if this is the case!

I suppose it is some sort of good news though :?

What about if such a place had outside seating. Can you still smoke outside? The UK laws are something like you wont be able to smoke anywhere public that is more enclosed than open. So some bus stops you wont be able to smoke, others you will. That will be fun to debate :D
