Sidthecrow wrote: Yes man I have that a number of the Trojan 3 disk box-sets they are all pretty good, that one is about the third best of my collection.

The best 2 are the Trojan Rudeboy 3 disk box set or the Trojan Dub 3 disk box set, the dub boxset is fantastic essential with the green and also always good to listen to after a night clubbing, it really helps and is quite trippy.

Also anything buy Augustus Pablo is always fantastic.
There's a volume 2 of the Dub box set and a Dub Rarities box set too, all good. For a really trippy one, try Sly & Robbie - "A Dub Experience".

I'm with you on the Augustus Pablo, too. That melodica just sends me daft.

Yer I love Sly and Robbie, also anything produced by Ninny the Observor or living legend Lee Scratch Perry. What are the other 2 boxsets like? I was tempted by them on amazon the other day.

I quite like the early reggae/ ska rudeboy sound - Desmond Decker Jimmy Cliff et al. Really cool stuff.

I got an amazing box set a few years back - listed as Groundation Count Ossie and the mysterious roots of rastafari - just loads of chanting to drums and rudimentary instruments. On disk 2 there are really laid down roots versions of such classics as O Carrolina. Disk one is basically going through Rasta beliefs etc

I quite enjoy a bit of Space Rock when Im in an alternative frame of mind, chiefly Hawkwind - the tunes 'space is deep' and 'sonic attack' are two mind blowing tunes.

dr. benway wrote:a few other groups that are worth listening to while smoking weed are: the german bands Can, Amon Düül 2, Popol Vuh; the Sergius Golowin album "Lord Krishna Von Goloka", almost all the artists from the Warp record label, leonard cohen and a lot of other musicians;
dr benway knows his shit.

for me, music and marijuana have always been different sides to the same coin (or should that be 12”?); i can’t imagine music without marijuana, and i can’t imagine marijuana without music.

the stuff i’m flying high to at the minute includes-

nigerian funk/afrobeat- recently there has been a lot of early ‘70s african funk and afrobeat getting released in compilations and most of it is seriously good, seriously funky. a couple of the better ones are “african scream contest” and “nigeria ’70, lagos jump”. anything by afrobeat god fela kuti is well worth checking out, i’d just buy a “best of” if you fancy some of his stuff which is an amazing cross between nigerian hi-life and american funk.

the animal collective. seriously weird experimental new york band who sound like a sample of 2 cats fucking on yer first listen and god’s own choir by yer tenth! if you don’t like fucked up shit, i’d say this isn’t for you. my money is on dr benway loving their shit tho, lol!

techno. brain music, made for smoking.

i could go on but i don’t want to bore my fellow forum members, but i’d be more than happy to continue talking shit about music with anybody willing to PM me.

as for songs about smoke....

bob dylan- rainy day women #12 & 35, (sample lyric “Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good/They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would/They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home/Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone/But I would not feel so all alone/EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!)

beastie boys- get it together (sample lyric “get it together, get it together, phone is ringing, oh my god!”)

the fall- deer park (sample lyric “they get a sex thrill off a sixteenth of Moroccan”)

And last but not least, pharcyde’s hits from the bong (sample lyric “it’s the bud, not the beer, ‘cos the bud makes me wizer”)

indeed.
