I was totally against it until I heard their POV. They want to kill a few hundred out of a population of 25,000 (forget which type of whale, but it's not endangered). As the whale-murderer pointed out, the UK is incapable of managing it's seas properly (cf cod decline etc), so it's a bit cheeky of us to say anything. They decide their own fish quotas (as they're not in the EU), and seem to do that far more scientifically and efficiently than we do, so maybe it is hypocritical to question their ways. It's just cos whales are big and cute that we get so upset.
Not to hijack the thread, just a point of view...
Whaling is supported by 75% of the Icelande population apparently.
Their fisherman fear that the voracious appitite of the whale decimates their fish stocks.
Fair enough, they only take 40 minke and fin whales a year, so they do at least show some restraint.
The Japanese hunt the poor bastards all the way to Antartica, taking 850 Minke Whales, 100 Sei Whales, 50 Humpback Whales, 50 Fin Whales, and 50 Bryde’s Whales, 10 Sperm Whales, some of these are endangered.
And just like the Icelanders the Japanese declare that all kills are entirely for "scientific research purposes".
There is something truely spiritual about having a close encounter with a whale, that never leaves you. Not such a rare occurence where I live (fortunately), but each time is like the first time when it happens.
It's got me stuffed how anyone without a commercial interest in it can condone it.
