Basically, anywhere you py under about 70 euro a night for is going to be a shithole.

And anywhere on the bigger canal streets, no matter how posh, is likely to be crawling with wildlife.

apologies for the delay in replying, though I guess there are going to be a few threads like that ;)

Yes, my first time in Amsterdam I intended to rent a cheap hotel room. Upon arriving, I kept finding rip off rates and dodgy geezers hanging around the businesses that promised to find the cheapest rates for hotels. In the end I thought sod it, I'll kip back at the airport. I then missed a few planes over a few days (first time abroad solo, was flying out to get married in Kazakhstan), and just decided to spend my money on smokables instead. Wouldn't recommend it, but it was an interesting time at least ;) And my wife (obviously) still married me, despite me being a little late to arrive in her country.

1st post on this forum since it's resurrection, glad to be here, glad to have found VDF as an addition, and glad I'm now only skimming the posts over at the more politicized/troll occupied forum.

[edit]

oh, and re. getting crap places for 70E/night - you can certainly spend that sort of budget and get a good enough place (even apartment!). If all the people going are friendly enough to share a double bed without assuming anyone is going to jump them...

Hotel Groot next door to Amnesia when it was called Whootsie Tootsie. The smallest hotel room in the world.

HOTEL NEAUTRAL LMAO

It was my first trip to Amsterdam me and 3 friends landed on a friday night around 9 pm with no accomendation booked. I was only 17 at the time 2004 (omg times flew by!!!) We walked out of Cenrtal station not knowing what to expect , buzzing that we made it to the Dam. I thought fuck this I wana get rid of my bag and get smoking. So we walked down Damrak and found the hotel Neautral next to mcdonalds by the victora hotel. We paid 40e each had 2 twin rooms. My room was a joke !! 1 wardrobe 1 sink 2 beds . I woke up almost touching lips with my friend even though we were on seperate beds. Thats how small the room was. Shared bathroom with about 10 rooms.Stuck of shit everytime you walked in lol. The window had a fire exit outside and was locked by a piece of wood proper oldskool!!! The place was the pits flithy wall paper / carpets curtains

Looking back it was a funny trip and glad I went but you get what you pay for I suppose!!!
Bin Dam about 7-8 times since and stayed at the city hotel (rembrand square) excellent rates and clean tidy secure rooms (www.city-hotel.nl)

hotel croydon on warmestraat is a shithole, went there on myfirst trip to the dam back in the day with 9 other lads. got dropped off at dam sq from airport and walked down warmestraat first, saw the winston but it was abit dear back then so we walked down and say this hotel above a dodgy kebab shop, was quite cheap so we agreed to pay fr 1 nite as we wanted to explore and find a betta hotel, once we went up the narrow stairs to our rooms i thought this is proper shit, graffiti from previous occupants mould on the floor, crap security..

never again, every time i walk down here i look at this cespit and have a good ol giggle lol

Over the years I've stopped in some nice places and some real shit-holes in Amsterdam, but the worst had to be the Quentin Arrive.

They wouldn't let me check in when I got there (11.30am) or even leave my bags, so I could go and come back to check in an hour later. Eventually when they did let me in I found my way to the top of the building (hmmm) and sat myself down on the bed.

The toilet "nearby on the floor" was broken. The shower "nearby on the floor" was in fact two floors down and shared by three floors of pissed-off people.
The room would not lock from inside, there were puke stains on the top three landing carpets and the overall vibe from this "recently renovated" was one of squalor. Ok, it's cheap - but I've stayed in cheaper (Hotel Beursstraat) and much nicer places.

I stayed at the Dam Hotel as well, but found it quite acceptable - the room was nothing special, but had a shower and toilet, and even though the breakfast consisted of little more than bread, jam and coffee, it was better than nothing and didn't upset my stomach first thing in the morning! They also had that most magical and rare of devices - a lift.

Hotel Vijaya was moderately cheap and had little to offer other than, again, en-suite facilities and a good central location...

The hotel Beursstraat was one of the best finds on my first ever trip over... after arriving late at night with nothing pre-booked, I'd walked around and around for a good hour before realising it was going to be a hostel for the first night... I wouldn't care to repeat this experience again in a hurry, so first thing in the morning I found myself on a room-finding mission. The first place I walked into was the Beursstraat and was amazed that the price I was quoted for a room with shower/toilet was only €3 more than the hostel! I paid the guy in advance for the next couple of nights and relaxed...

Hotel Aspen was very pleasant, just off Dam square on Raadhuisstraat, but a little further away from the station than I'd normally like. Shared facilities, but clean and secure. Next time over, I'll be stopping at the Di-Ann (next door on Raadhuisstraat) with some friends who really rate the place - we got a great deal because now the owners know us, we book direct with them rather than through the online bookers. This incidentally, is a great way to do it - once you find a good place that suits you - get the hotel's details so you can contact them direct.

HOTEL

Post by Kermit »

I stayed in a hotel on called the veteren (I THINK) on my first ever trip. It was a really crap but had a good view and plenty of CS nearby. Was there for a week with my Girl and it rained from day one we had a crap hotel. but the weed was excellent and the prices where in Guilders still which i think was alot cheaper.

Hotel Utopia

Post by tdw121270 »

Hotel Utopia, avoid at all costs. Not only was this place infested with vermin, the bed linnen was wafer thin, pillow the size and thickness of a stamp. And the management stuffed me for an extra day even though I was sure I had paid already.

Ahh, the price some will pay to use a hotel they have been told they can get away smoking in the rooms for (even if there site says no smoking) lol.

And you thought it was called Durty Nellys due to it being an Irish bar lol. I'd never ever stay there as there have been far more bad things said about this place than good. Just goto the bar and notice the look of the residents when they come down or in the bar for a drink, says it all. You'd need to be well stoned to even think about booking to stay at that place!.
