After many years of slumming the Kabul and A.V.C. on Woermastraat, with dozens of assorted roomates, I decided to do a package this time and got the jupiter on tweed Helmerestraat off the Leidesplein. What a nightmare that was. The rooms are chopped to the tiniest proportions possible and there is no form of ventilation. the en suite bathroom was bigger than the 2 by 4 metre room and stank of piss
(not even mine) The owner is a miserable ,confrontational negative ,unhelpfull, sack of shit and I was happier and more comfortable in military prison..

ah hah! answering another thread made me think about the worst hotels ive been in, and hey presto here is a thread about it
unfortunatly i cannot remeber the name, so this story may be of no use, but it was horrid none the less, so i'd like to share it.
a couple of friends got the boat out early to the dam and had the task of finding a place, whilst two more of us turned up early afternoon. on meeting them they assured us they had somewhere. i thought no more of it, and set about a whole afternoon and night of fun.
then came the time to go to bed.
it was above a coffeeshop. the stair case up to the rooms was next to the toilet entrnace. quite why i dont know, but the whole of upstairs had red lights instead of normal white bulbs, giving eveything in the hallway and room a horrible feel. the room, had no carpet, just wooden slats, ripped wall paper, and no windows. just red light. the four of us were in the same room, 1 bed and three matresses on the floor. the room was surpisingly 'ensuite'. although the bathroom door in the room was inexplicably about a foot and a half off the ground, you had to jump up into it, and inside the bathroom, was a shattered sink, and broken remnants of a mirror. the scum marks on the walls and visble decay everywhere was frightening. this was real crack house territory.
needless to say i slept with all my belongings firm against me.
we were woken twice by prostitutes who knocked on the door.
only wish i could rememeber the name. but i guess as with many traumatic events, your brain doesnt want to remember.

I think all bad stories are a lesson to us all to propperly research accomodation and try and filter out genuine reviews and advice over those who most certainly work at or own certain places to falsly "up" there own shit-hole of a place into something thats it's not.
For me if a place seems too cheap, but has seemingly mainly good reviews then something is a little wrong somewere. I'd certainly be much more likely to trust places like this than those review sites when looking for a place to stay.

I used Thomas Cook which is a long established travel agent and I also checked photos of the Hotel on the Internet.
As you are so knowledable on this subject I will never ever ever book a package again without you giving it your express blessing.

I'm certainly not knowledable about such matters but in several years of going to Amsterdam, like others, have heard and read a hell of a lot of horror stories on poor accomodation in Amsterdam. Often such places have been booked by reviews on general accomodation review sites by those that have "visited" the accomodations in question. Often these sites are visited by owners and employees of shit-holes of accomodation often mentioned on these and other forums. They then act as "qenuine" visitors to certain places and give fake reviews to effectivly cancel-out true genuine reviews and improve there overall rating.
So where you get the idea of Thomas f'in Cook package holidays from and any review site they run for there package holidays I really dont know ? lol.

Thomas Cook was the main agent .I booked it at a travel agent near my home . If you admit to not being knowledable on the subject why do you persist? I made my point and you are not even gracious enough to accept that.... I worked on the Warmoestraat 20 years ago and also lived in Leiden and Nijmegen. For this reason I find it difficult to relate to a "tourist mentality" such as yours...Dave.... really sorry.

First off I'm not being persistent as you say but simply giving an opinion based on what I know, read and have been told over the years, call it experience if you like . And I never said I'm any kind of expert and\or my post should be taken as gospal. I posted what I post and I'll say in all probability I'm most likely correct. And I certainly never said what I posted is set in stone!.
If you choose to book via the likes of Thomas Cook to Amsterdam as a package holliday then your sure in the minority and therefor unlikely to ever see the point of my post in the first place. As I can asure you that the vast majority on here and other such places simply book there flights and accomodation seperate. They then often use seemingly independent "nothing to do with Thomas Cook or any other assosiated package travel company" accomodation review sites to try and sort out there accomodation based on apparent visiter based reviews.
The reviews on such sites are often clearly fake to those that have used them and then afterwards posted on how bad they are on sites like this.
But as YOU admit to, based on having worked in Amsterdam 20 years ago, to not understanding the mentality of tourists certainly miss read or understood what I posted.
Simply put, people going to Amsterdam for the best part dont do it via package holidays any more.

I find Trip Advisor a reliable source of information where hotels are concerned. The list of the top 324 including reviews can be found here.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g1885 ... otels.html
Pixie I note on there that the Jupiter is rated 225/324 from 26 reviews, so the posters on Trip advisor tend to agree with you that the place is a DUMP.

I wish to change my statement about "Tourist types" boring me . At the end of the day I am one myself . The fact is certain types bore me So
there you are.
Also why do none of the foreign visitors to Amsterdam seem to mix with the local people either? (Or each other for that matter)
I have been a vet of Holland since spring 75 which is before most of these whippersnappers were even born, and believe you me the changes I have seen in the scene there are massive. anyway my hotel was shit
and it was not my fault . Check my intro and you will see I really am sick of meeting people of a certain bent and it is very true. There are some fine people here and I have learned very much about many things and am gratefull for that. I am really concerned about how this site is coping without an income and think it really is a great place to discover like minds and have a good laugh..Don"t get me wrong because my aim is true ...
POV & LEASE.....PIX...
