Also why do none of the foreign visitors to Amsterdam seem to mix with the local people either? (Or each other for that matter)
I have been a vet of Holland since spring 75 which is before most of these whippersnappers were even born, and believe you me the changes I have seen in the scene there are massive. anyway my hotel was shit
and it was not my fault . Check my intro and you will see I really am sick of meeting people of a certain bent and it is very true. There are some fine people here and I have learned very much about many things and am gratefull for that. I am really concerned about how this site is coping without an income and think it really is a great place to discover like minds and have a good laugh..Don"t get me wrong because my aim is true ...

For the record I dont have anything against you on a personel level. So you'll certainly not get any reall argument from me in any way. But your responce on certain issues, well at least this is based on far less than I know about and thus you simply cant see it from the point of view that many might see and the subject at hand for the thread.

I simply dont see why you brought Thomas Cook and package hollidays into the matter at all as it clearly was not part of the thread. And you have now said you have a problem with tourist type people which you say bore you!.

Anyways might be good to have someone on here with completly different opinions and thoughts I guess. As if we all had the same opinion then it would be boring lol.

I am in the process of re locating to Holland permanantly, and that should make things a little simpler...anyway having had a shit holiday (got my money ripped by two hookers first night)

they never stole it they cajoled it....(.never again) I used to just turn up in A/dam and take it as it came...Last time I tried to do it right . I have only been on line five weeks and am still learning but I did book a package and will do so again when I go to Bolivia

I know or care nothing for reviews from others ..Ref Thomas Cook ...for the second time I did not book with them I did it through a small local company and found out later that the latter ran tings.
A sympathetic nod in my direction for having been ripped by organised gangsters would have been far better received by myself than having salt rubbed in the wound.... I have nothing against you Dave or Chop or anybody else...... I can be prickly when I feel slighted anyway enough let"s talk about da chronic

Never knew you'd been ripped off at all, sorry to hear that. Was my main worry on my first trip several years ago. Did get somewhat stired up by all the people hanging round the street corners at night looking at the tourists in a rather un-healthy manor.

But I gather the police have sorted a lot of that out of the main areas these days!. Still, I'd class myself as fairly wise on that issue to even be concerned more than slightly these days. Not that it means it will never happen to me or anyone on here of cause.

Anyways back to the point at hand. I know a lot of people slate the Bulldog Hotel and to be honest I often fail to see why?. As it's always seemed a nice place to me. Even the dorms are ok to a point if you dont mind that sort of thing. It's certainy a clean hotel to stay at for the money, private rooms are a little on the tiny and expensive side. But I guess we all have different expectations on what we expect for our money.

Pixie I note on there that the Jupiter is rated 225/324 from 26 reviews, so the posters on Trip advisor tend to agree with you that the place is a DUMP.

You are quite right Chopitup (btw what?) I never knew it was possible to review a hotel being new on line..very helpfull and informative If someone had told me in my youth that there would one day be a "trip advisor" I would have thought it incredibly futuristic and flown off on a psycedelic tangent muttering "whatever next (man) Thanx 4 the Info ..

This one would be real easy. A few years ago, I needed a couple of nights somewhere while waiting for my apartment, and made the mistake of staying at the Utopia, mainly as there was a decent coffeeshop downstairs. Well the c-shop was below average, but the hotel was horrible, from filthy bathrooms to bumping my head on the angled ceiling. Crappy stench, squeeking floors, filthy carpet, and mice. I had a hard time convincing myself to get under the covers. I wound up sleeping in my clothes on top of the bed. I wasn't comfortable at all. And believe me, I have stayed at many dumps when I was of student age.( Kabul, Parima, the old AVC, and NBBS hostels.)

Hotel Gerkstopel, fucking awfull this place, never be staying there again, fucking radiator was like a furness could burnt your gear on it.

manofo did it for me and my mate the 1st time we hit the 'Dam........room was 5foot by 7 foot,smashed furniture and fittings,uncontrollable heating( room like a sauna) 85 euros for 1 night! it was pissin down with rain so we just paid it and found somewhere cheaper and cleaner the next day.....and don't forget to take oxygen and climbing gear if you're on the top floor!!!!

I have noticed that The Dam Hotel is getting quite bad reviews , is it really that bad? Just that I am staying there soon for a couple of nights. 9-11th Septemebr.

Also coz im paranoid and I dont want to fly on the 11th I am staying in the 'Budget Hotel Tourist Inn' (quite a mothfull) does any on know if its any good (sorry didnt want to make a new thread for that query).

Can you cancel your booking do ya know? There are loadsa better places to stay i reckon. I used to stay at the Hotel Vijaya in the RLD. But now use www.apartmentpaul.com
The cheap one is good at 60 euro per night. Bit out of town near Leidseplein but better than a hotel....

Sid - I've stayed at the Dam before with no problems at all - the room was clean - had its own shower/toilet... Pretty basic breakfast, but very welcome first thing in the morning when most places aren't open and awake yet...

It also has a lift! Unheard of in most smaller hotels in Amsterdam... I was torn between this place and the Vijaya, as axeman mentioned, for my October trip - I've stayed in both places and found each quite acceptable. Nowt special, but they tick all the right boxes - the main ones being location and price.

Now for the last 10 mins or so, I've been looking over that link to apartmentpaul.com - I gotta say I'm well impressed both with the price and the features, etc. - the €60 apartment C in the Leidseplein looks great value for money - it might be a bit further out, but that's why they made trams! I shall definitely bear that one in mind for next year - nice one axeman!

Thanks, I have spoken with the guys who I am going with and we will stick with the Dam for now - simply because it is a place to crash really. Its only 2 nights my friends are flying back to Bristol on the 11th and Im staying else where.

I usually stay as Hostel Cosmos which is a great place if you dont mind a bit of noise but they have a strict no over 35's policy on of my friends is 40 so it is a no go.

I have also stayed in the Sphinx Hotel which is not good, I booked for 3 people and they thought it was a family group however it was not, it had never come up in disscussion when booking, the owner gave us a real hard time about it the throughout the week we were there.

I have stayed at the Central Amsterdam Hotel on the Damrak - which was reasonable except it had the traditonal Adam winding staircase we were on the top floor not good after 30 odd joints.

that day i woke up in rotterdam wanting to be back in amsterdam
me being high sayed fuck 75km aint much to do by bike!
well after getting lost about 100 time a end up in amstel and started looking for the bos caming ground witch i was the year b4 got lost tryin to find it .so first bush a saw pulled out sleeping bag and sleept walk up next day wit bites from alover itching for 3 days
