amsterdam around Christmas?

Post by cantona7 »

was just wondering what Amsterdam was like around that time. I assume its cold, but is it really crowded, a good time to visit? Just found out I'll be in England over Christmas celibrating with my mom's side of the family. Thought id jump on easy jet and do a day trip to Amsterdam haha.

Yes, of course it is cold but a really nice time to visit as well. The city is decorated for the season, lights and decorations everywhere, and looks really beautiful. The city does get busy around the Christmas holidays but dont let that put you off. I think it's a great time of the year to be in Amsterdam. Just my 2 euro cents. Peace.

thanks for the input puffin. My only concern about amsterdam being crowded is being able to get a seat in a coffeeshop. I enjoy smoking outside and walking around in my own town but not comfortable doing it in a foreign country. Not sure what the latest easy jet flight back to gatwick is. Do they fly anywhere out of the midlands to amsterdam? thats where I'll be staying.

There will be a place for you in coffeeshops. It isnt so crowded that you cant find a place to chill (warm up), have a coffee and a smoke. Amsterdam is a very laid back city, cantona7. No need to worry. Come over and enjoint yourself! :D I dont know anything about easy jet's flights. Peace.

It's meant to be fairly quiet over Xmas in the C/S's as lots of people go back home.

You'll have to check who flies where, but the main low-cost carriers are Easy Jet, Ryan Air, Bmi Baby, Jet2. This may help too:

and http://www.kayak.co.uk/

You can fly from Luton (largest), Birmingham or East Midlands Airports. EM is about 40 miles from Kettering http://tinyurl.com/2f83mf (Airport is on the top left, just below Castle Donnington, follow SE to Kettering.)

http://www.eastmidlandsairport.com/cms/1/home.html

It's usually fairly quick and easy with these flights. Go for it Cantona.

Try stay at least one night if you can, there and back in a day leaves you with not enough smoking hours mate!

A dorm room at the Winston ( www.winston.nl ) is cheap and comfy.

Have done many day trips to Amsterdam in the past, first sleazy jet flight from luton around 6am,be in barneys for breakfast around 9,leave Amsterdam around 7.30pm and be back in luton for 10pm.Also if you buy enough cigarettes/tobacco whilst in Amsterdam the money saved will easily pay for your flight.

you can take motor coaches to Amsterdam from the uk right? i assume they load them onto some sort of ferry? Only reason i ask this is because last time i was in Amsterdam I was talking to this guy from somewhere in England and he said he had taken some sort of motor coach. maybe i misunderstood him?

lol its going to be a hassle to get away for one day haha . mom wont be happy. I would stay a full 24 hrs if i could, although I dont get to see the family in England but once every 2 or so years. Saw my cousin in 06 but havent seen the rest since 05. Feel lucky i get to see them during Christmas. Never experienced Christmas outside my state before.

Oh well, as themadhippy said, it's very possible to do a daytrip, it's just that if you get a flight delayed it can screw up your day. Forget about coaches for a daytrip though, it's much easier and quicker to get a flight.
