SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2008

We're up by 8am and the sun is shining so we figure it's a good day to hit the Albert Cuypmarket, do some shopping and hit up a few coffeeshops. We begin our morning with a haze blunt and a super maroc spliff and head downstairs for breakfast (we have a KILLER buffet at the NH City Centre free of charge). While the breakfast IS free I'm getting my ass kicked everytime I use the hotels wireless internet at a CrAzY 20 e per day. Of course the wife and I enjoy the convenience but limited it to two days (which STILL winds up costing us almost $70.00!!).

So post breakfast bakes and we head towards the Dam to catch us one of those tuk tuk to takes up to the Cuypstraat. The morning sun was short lived and its now overast and starting to rain a bit. We run into a group of about 3 bicycle tuk tuks and, essentially, choose the one that LOOKS like he wants our business. "How much to take us both to the Cuypstraat"? "6 euro each" - QUITE the bargain! Last November we got lost trying to find it so 12 euro for both of us is a no brainer. On route our driver discusses US politics and knows more about our candidates than most Americans.

His biggest fear, Huckabee and Giuliani and he had high hopes for a Democratic candidate - EITHER Clinton or Obama. It's funny, we got a stern warning "you Amerians better not mess up this election - the rest of the world are REALLY not going to like you anymore!". We laugh and say "don't worry - if we mess up again WE'RE moving to Amsterdam ourselves!". Our driver told us the Dutch and Europeans are amazed at how religion strongly influences our political decisions and they prefer to keep it COMPLETELY seperate. After about 20 minutes of riding in style we come to our destination, the Albert Cuypmarket.

After wandering about the market for a bit we quickly realize we haven't been baked in a bit so it's off to the only coffeeshop in the Cuypstraat we've found...KATSU.

The woman behind the counter looks familiar from our November visit and we appreciate her assistance picking out some gear. I KNOW what I want hasj-wise, I've been eyeing the CITRAL at 10 e/ 0.75 g and pick up the recommended SILVER PEARL HAZE at 10 e/g. We settle down to try our newly acquired snacks and...WOW...the silver pearl is INCREDIBLE! Even better than the Dutch flowers smoke and the Citral (which, I was told was a INDIAN hasj) actually tasted citrus-like with orange and lemon overtoned which was quite unique for a hasj and highly recommended.

Alright, Mellow Yellow/Bushdoctor and a return visit to the Tweede to come!

But why would you name a coffeeshop after her? At least Popeye smoked a pipe  Just seems rather odd to me.

Hmmm, not sure why Betty's is named as-such...but, to tell you the truth, I'm not too sure where ANYBODY in Amsterdam really gets their coffeeshop names from. I like the quirky naming style (Funny People, Jolly Joker, Softland, etc.) and Betty Boop's is no exception!

Ok, where was I? We left KATSU baked and caffeine refreshed. I absolutely ADORE coming back to Amsterdam so soon - it feels like we never really left and we soon feel like, well, we're HOME ''.

We wander back through the Cuypmarket, not really buying anything but popping in and out of endless stores offering everything from leather jackets to various curry powders ('kerry' powder!).

Even MORE impressive is the vast array of THE freshest seafood I have ever encountered. You never smell fish, only the faint scent of ocean as you approach. Damn my lazy ass for not cooking any on our last trip in November when I had a kitchen!

So we head out of the Market area and (hopefully!) towards the Mellow Yellow and the center of town. We're starting to get a wee bit hungry and are super excited when we encounter the same little market selling sandwiches (the one right around the corner from the Mellow) that we did before. Yep, I see groceries on the left and the counter on the right - this is the place! The kind lady is not working today but an equally kind gentlemen greets us as we enter. The wife knows right off what she's getting (ham & cheese, mayo, cukes etc.) and before I get the same the man behind the counter reminds us of todays special: a boiled ham. HoLy ShIt! THIS is the stuff I went searching for in Haarlem last November and could NOT locate. So he makes me this freaking heavenly little sandwich complete with the local mustard and my day has just gotten even THAT much better!

Around the corner and we're back "in the Sh@de" at the MELLOW YELLOW. We approach the counter seeking our favorites and, lo-and-behold, both TRAINWRECK and ORANGE HAZE are on the menu. First up, the ORANGE HAZE at 11 e/g. Tasty & kind, it wasn't quite as good as we remember but still had that great combo of haze & orange that's really different from the standard orange bud you find. Of course, it's ALL good here in the Motherland and we're enjoying ev-er-y minute of it!

Back at the hotel (in pretty short time, too - thanks to the orange haze) we sample up the TRAINWRECK at 12 e/g. WOW, this shit knocked us on our ASSES. A heavy, heavy hitter with a strong bite. Hoo wee!

Ok, we've chilled and I'm a bit antsi - see, we haven't been to the BUSHDOCTOR yet and I'm, like, honey LET'S GO! She happily complies and we're heading to Rembrandt square for a little hash-ish baby. We come in and it's a different budtender then last time but equally chatty. We go over the menu:

I ask, what's the diff betwen the Mazari and the Aslama? See, we've HAD the MexMaroc before (see my November report) and it was, perhaps, the 2nd best hash I've EVER had (next to the King Hassan) - gooey, caramelly it was a one-up on the Rifman and at a good price. The tender tells us no REAL difference, all three (mexmaroc, aslama & mazari) are outdoor, Rif Mt Maroc made the Isolator style and the Mazari just happens to be the top 5% while the Aslama may be the top 10%. We settle in for top shelf MAZAR at 25 e/g and man, let me tell you - this was, hands down T*H*E B*E*S*T H*A*S*H I've ever encountered! I can't tell you just how caramelly, squishy and aromatic it was and that was JUST TOUCHING IT. We settled upstairs on the 3rd floor completing a terrifying ascent up their ladder-like stairway with hot chocomels in hand to find ourselves comfortably alone in the small, 4 table room. Picking the best window seat we settle in to smoke this new-found treasure. Folks, this stuff smoked like a DREAM, taking us a good 45 minutes to complete as we stared out the window lost in thought and dreams. Please, I implore you, TRY THE MAZARI at bushdoctors!

Promise?

If I'm not mistaken, Citral is one of the strains that comprise the Lemon Skunk going around.
