Where are all the experiments

Post by 68camaro »

This amazing substance is so wonderful!! I've been on high doses of opiates for 11 years now, in the last 3 years I've been messing around with medical marijuana. That is what the state calls it and charges a $150.00 a year for the privilege of the use. I have only used beans from around here, and once from a great place in Canada that can no longer send to the USA. The difference was astounding!!
My question is, there have to be some experiments on this plant, the properties have such potential at all kinds of help and natural help at that! I don't find a much on this issue, I am truly amazed at how well some types work and how some types make the situation worse. It doesn't happen often but on occasion and it is terrible. This amazes me cause how can one type help when the other hurts! Are the plants not from the same origin, they had to start somewhere, or could it be mans hand trying to do something the plant was not meant for? These and other questions like these run through my mind. There seem to be so many strains, how does one find what will help him or her with out going broke? These experiments would be so beneficial to all! :? :o

At root of your question is that there are three sorts of cannabis: Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis. Of the three, the first two are smokable. Cannabis Ruderalis is not, although some breeders have found some applications for using it in creating new strains, because it has a very short flowering time, and in the limited instances when the smoking properties of Cannabis Sativa or Cannabis Indica have been successfully blended with the quick-flowering properties of Cannabis Ruderalis, a few new strains have come out of it.

Of the two smokable varieties, sativa and indica are quite different, and probably at the root of why some strains ease your pain and some may exacerbate it.

Sativa, at its purest form, is a very uppy, peppy smoke. It is highly recommended to recreational users as a daytime smoke. However, for medical uses, if the purpose is more of a thudding or deadening effect, sativas may not be your best choices (you'd have to actually smoke them, and know precisely what you were smoking, to know, however). Theoretically, anything that heightens the senses also could heighten pain.

Indica, at its purest, is a knockdown stone for the recreational user, recommended for afternoons and evenings. In practical application, the degrees of knockdown vary widely, and some indicas are perfectly suitable for daytime. Indicas generally are considered more likely to induce the prototypical couchlock-and-munchies effect. Again, your mileage may vary. You'd have to try it. I would think indicas might, in the broadest generalities, be more conducive to fighting pain.

From a breeding perspective, there probably is an Adam and Eve of cannabis, so to speak. On the sativa side, The Original Haze, the pure landrace sativa, is still available for unhybridized purchase, but its long flowering time and sketchy yields make it better suited to breeding projects. On the indica side, I'm not so sure where it all started, though I suspect Afghanistan and the kushes of the general region are a pretty good guess, and undoubtedly are at the root of many good indica breeding projects.

The illegal status of cannabis (in most countries) has greatly hindered much research into this wonder plant. There have been some though, by cannabis research professionals. I have a few suggestions of places to start to learn about medicinal cannabis.

Books:

Handbook of Cannabis Therapeutics; From Benchmark to Bedside by Ethan B Russo, MD & Franco Grotenhermen, MD.
(This book reads like a medical book too. They get pretty technical but covers all the ailments that cannabis can treat including pain and pain management).

Hemp For Health; The Medicinal and Nutritional Uses of Cannabis Sativa by Chris Conrad
(A lot of good easy to understand benefits of cannabis).

Also, Treating Yourself has quite a bit of good info and a magazine on mmj.

I hope you find some relief from your pain, 68camaro. Peace.
