Age Limits

Post by schmegmar »

Me and three of my buddies will be in Amsterdam for a few days this summer. All of my friends will be 18 when were there, but Ill still be 17, though I look older than at least 18. I was wondering how strict the coffeshops are about the 18 and up limit. Do they actually check ID, could I still get in? Is it different with different shops?

Thanks for giving me insight.

Did you post this on Channels? I'd agree with most of what was said there. I've heard the shops are getting stricter about age limits, though I've never seen it personally. I haven't been since 2006. Not sure of your nationality, but the only valid form of I.D. for U.S. citizens is a passport. I've checked this on the State Department website. I believe the Netherlands has an I.D. law, the cops can randomly ask anyone for I.D., if you don't show, I think you get a ticket or...

So my advice would be not to try it. You could get a shop in trouble. Maybe have your friends buy and go smoke in the park or hotel. Don't buy on the street either.

coffeeshops can ge big fines for having people in without ID. expect to be challenged for ID everywhere. If your underage just get your mates to buy it and go to a bar like barneys uptown where smoking is allowed but they dont sell herb so no id is required. just my 2c.

Last April I was carded in three different shops 2 in Amsterdam and 1 in Haarlem, don't remember names, and at the time I was 61.
Guess they weren't taking any chances.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm American, and being so I assume I have "least desired tourist status" so I wont try to push it. I was disappointed at the prospect of not getting to enjoy the freedom of lighting up legally in a public establishment, but I didnt take into account that there are other bars where its allowed, so its all cool. Were staying on Haarlemerstraat, can anyone tell of bars in this area that are good places to light up?

its closed down now. They've opened Barneys Uptown on Haarlemerstraat right opposite Barneys Coffeeshop/Breakfast Bar. You guys will be fine smoking in there as they allow it. As they arn't a coffeeshop you dont need ID though.

You are your own ambassador, so the choice is yours. A simple "please" and "thanks" go a long way. Have fun.

definitely don't want to cause problems...

I think it will all be good, as long as my friends don't get too stoned buying the shit and forget about me on the street!!

But damn, its gonna be a great time, I wish I was leaving tomorrow!
