A reminder to all you first-timers - before your trip, get some walking practise in if you're not used to walking around all day! Even if you plan on taking trams, chances are you will walk miles and miles per day, and you will get blisters and sore feet/back if you don't prepare. Also make sure that your footwear is comfortable and well broken-in. Don't let this spoil your trip

Ed Amsterdam's trip report got me thinking:

I've always walked....... and I've never had a problem with my feet...... sure they ache a bit, but if your shoes fit and you're in decent shape you won't have much of a problem.
Saying that I did once go on a trip to Amsterdam in 2001 where one of the party had new shoes..... big mistake..... big big mistake..... blisters, infection and hospital...... not a great way to spend time in Amsterdam.

When the going gets weird, the weird get going!
I also walk a lot - which can be a problem for me as i am carrying a couple of persistent injuries! I usually have a middle day while i'm there when i smoke my stash either at my hotel/apartment or at a local coffeeshop to save on the legs. Also, the trams are useful and reliable (unlike English buses!)
Well I wouldn't ride through the most people populated areas. For instance, if I was coming from Leidseplein and wanted to go to Centraal, I would take the Singel. Its much faster. Though it's hard to beat strolling around the little side streets on foot, you can cover much more ground on a bike. If you feel comfortable enough. It really is easier than you might think.
from my experience fitting walking boots the most important thing is a good pair of footbeds, like superfeet http://www.superfeet.com/
