Prostitutes Turn to the Streets

Prostitutes in brothels are losing so much money to tax controls they are choosing to work on the streets. This was established by brothel owners and room hirers.
“Many women are working on the streets and in hotels and into the illegality”, said Metje Blaak from the De Rode Draad (The red thread) prostitute organisation. The tax service are offering the women two choices from July 1st. Either they pay tax as employees of the brothels, or they pay tax as a self employed entity.
Many self employed women have never paid tax. From 50 euros for a half hour they are left with just 22 euros over. From this they then have to pay for the room. “They can just as well go and be a cashier at a supermarket” said brothel owner Mireille.
