JAMAICA!! THAILAND if you got money for airfare only $$$ once there you can get an apartment for about 150usa a months in bangkok ;) i know of a place about 10km from airport and a trainstation is about 5km and everything is CHEAP! well every where in asia is cheap ;) it just the getting there! MExico 99$+tax gets you there from any state by bus once there you can CAMP for 50¢-2$ a night in low season you can get a nice room for about 10-30$ a night in a 3start all BY BEACHS ;) then from there CENTRAL america all CHEAP!
to get to SOUTH america tru CENTRAL NO ROADS so you need to take a BUS to PERU or COLUMBIA ;) where if WINTER you can get ROOMS in 3-4star hotel for about 3-20 a night ;) or you can do like we did COUCHSURFING OR WOOFFING (work on a BIO farm get $$ food and sleep) most these place youll find WEED i never did smoking in jamaica cause of G-friend at the time but friend just did this year and told me hes never goin back to AMSTERDAM! he says first few deal the weed wasnt the best but after talking wit the guy at hotel they FIX him up wit some real GANJA and blew hes mind from there on after meeting this rasta like my friend sayed once they knew where he was 5-6 guys would show up each day at hotel to try to sell him BAG (1oz) and was so cheap and good(but not best looking) he left like 4oz behind at hotel :S

I am in the States and I am taking my first trip to Amsterdam in Feb of 09.
My first thoughts were it is the wrong time......one euro cost me $1.58. My wife bought me a round trip ticket for $1000........I booked a room that at this time will cost 6oo for 8 nights............I expect to spend at least $2000 on food and smoke, and gifts for the ones I love..........THERE IS NO BAD TIME TO GO TO AMSTERDAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not rich........but I can save and this is a trip of a lifetime.........So if you can go, do so..........I would have stayed in a Hostel, but I am over 40 and they don't take old farts, or old hippies........................

don't hate me because I am north american..

Yep, i took my first Amsterdam trip last year. End of October. Had a blast, but it was expensive for me since the exchange rate (i think) 1.44
maybe a little more..?

Let just say, I was 'shocked' to pay 3 to 4 USD dollars for a small glass of coke. Damn addictions.. :)

I am not meaning to sound like some spoiled deserving ass, but the service in the food industry in Amsterdam was pretty poor. Took a long time to get another drink, etc.

Not a big deal. I still enjoyed it. But it made me wonder ...man, if I could open a restaurant over 'here' and offer top notch service..think of how successful you would be just for making a minor change and give good fast service.

You won't get rich at all. It's not like in the U.S. were they pay crappy wages and your working your tail off trying to make a living off your tips. They pay the waiters and waitresses a decent salary, so they don't have to give you good service.
We like it, while on vacation we're in no hurry to do anything, so having slow....but good service is part of enjoying our vacation.

Have you thought of staying in hostels instead of hotels. I haven't been to Amsterdam yet but I have been doing research for two years...I am excited. I know that some of them are bit scary, but for some more mula you can get a decent place. I am flying from Detriot to Amsterdam in Novemeber, which is considered the slower season and taking a connecting flight...with travel insurance my fight will be under $1000 round trip...which isnt too terrible. I hope your still planning on traveling.

if you really want to stay in a hostel you can. Some hostels in Amsterdam have age restrictions, but not all of them. Staying in a hostel if you are traveling solo can save you a lot of money.

What about Durty Nelly's, Bob's Youth Hostel, Hotel/Hostel @ Winston

@AZLaker:
I see where you are going w/your restaurant post. But... I know I'd prefer a slowly served meal rather than a fast one like in the US where the servers practically hover around one's table and snatch away plates that still have food on them. A leisurely meal is a good thing.

The hostel in Vondelpark is fine for old folks, the age thing is mostly in Bavaria. It's cleaner than quite a few of the hotels in town. Of course the downside being you can't smoke in there, but they have a bar with good prices on beer.

Whats so hard to understand here .
100 - 150 Quid a day . i'd say is average.
A 1000 a day every day however is not.

i went 10 days ago - exchange rate is crap at mo

i spent £380 in just under 3 days i was there (thurs pm til sunday pm)

i'd say youd need £130-150 a day at least - we smoked and drank all day and night - had a few hours off but got wasted on the whole lol

flight was £140 and hotel for 3 nights was £120

dear trip but worth it

Totally !
I still don't think people know where I'm coming from.
There was a 19 year old dude who said he done 5 grand in a week , and gave the impression he smoked the place dry.
I'm just saying I think I smell bullshit , that's all.
