Nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat would be a good bet for High Street stores like H&M etc, both just off Dam Square. Haarlemmerstraat/dijk is good for smaller boutique-y shops.

Kinda hard for a Yank to know what a NIrishmans girlfriend would consider fashionable ...heres an Albert Cuyp pic . My 20 something niece loved the top the ladies takin off the mannequin ...theres some highter end shops behind the stalls.De Vrouw loves to pick through the scarves ...maybe she'll get into it and you can slip down to Katsu

La Canna is on the Nieuwendijk, De Kuil is on Oudebrugsteeg between Nieuwendijk and Damrak, like was said before the Nieuwendijk is a big shopping strip. also try Magna Plaza behind Dam Square (its a shopping mall)

I've heard that all the High End shops can be found on P.C Hoofstraat(sp) down near the museum plein(sp). Having never been I can't say for sure, however I have bought MANY pairs of trainers from various shops on Nieuwendijk. Stuff I cant get here in the Burgh.

Get yourself out to the 'Nine streets' over in the Jordaan - great window shopping and lots of cool little boutiques and independent shops with stuff you won't see anywhere else.
