I know someonestayed there and said they treat their guest aweful. He was there 13 days and had to put a 13000 dollar deposit on the room which is obnoxious. He was so paranoid to smoke in there because of their rules and such. If you want a nice hotel and want to smoke, the Victoria is it for sure.
I need a miracle everyday

I have stayed here on a LastMin.com secret hotel, mid summer for £50 a night before! My window opened onto Damsqu and I openly tooted from that perfect spot morning noon and night. Late one night they started to film an action type film on dam square. It was so exciting waiting for hours for them to set up a shot, then drive through a load of boxes, all viewed from my luxury window.
To be honest, considering I have been visiting Amsterdam since I was 16 and have always looked at this hotel with such envious eyes, when I finally got to stay there aged 30, it wasn't all that. In fact, I have stayed in better 3 star hotels...
Still those front windows must be worth gold... Super view...

I have stayed at the "Kras" 5 times and there is simply no better location if you like to be in the heart of the action...
I wouldn't want to pay full price, but there are frequently deals that make this hotel a relatively reasonable value.
The hotel is NOT 5 star by US standards but most of the rooms are pretty nice. Be warned though that some sections of the hotel are much older than the rest. I was sent to the old wing when I stayed in a room with 2 other friends...I don't think it was a coincidence that the rooms for 3 were housed in this part of the hotel.
I have always gotten a smoking room and burned MANY grams of weed without any problem at all.
As far as knob jockeys go...having spent ~20 nights there, I can not recall seeing one gerbil roper. I wouldn't worry if you do encounter one though, I am sure they won't bite.
All in all, definitely stay in this hotel. Dam square out the front and the RLD in the back. The location alone makes this the best hotel in the 'Dam.

My above post has been a real coincidence for me!
I had booked an incredible deal from LastMin.com (amsterdam secret hotel offer) for my week (end of July beginning of August) for the NH Musica in the outskirts of Amsterdam, closer to the airport than city center, but at 240GBP for a 4 star Amsterdam hotel for the week, I felt it worth it... The friday before I depart I get an email saying the Musica cannot honor my booking and I am been transfered to the Kras!
I was like the lord of the manner strolling through the revolving doors to check in...
AS Bever says this is NOT a 5 star hotel by anyones standards. I am sure there are parts of the hotel that are 5 star but not the part where they put people who only pay 240 pounds for the week! The room is HUGE, the bed even bigger (is that possible) and the telly dwarfs the bed. Tea and coffee facilities (VERY RARE in amsterdam), nice toiletries but dated dated dated. Almost grubby around the edges.
Service on the whole was pretty spectacular, getting the minibar emptied so i could use the fridge was not a problem and neither was getting extra tea...
Tonight is my last night and I have treated myself to an upgrade, for 50 euros I am now booked into a Dam Squ facing room. Two massive windows that open all the way, going to be the best people spotting afternoon of the week.
There is a notice in every room explaining that Amsterdam is a very laid back city and the hotels guest should sit back and relax, but that you must NOT use soft or hard drugs in the hotel. I have had a couple of sneaky pipes of Terminator out of my window late at night though...

I've got two nights here, a Friday and Saturday in September. Booked through Priceline, paid $152 USD total for two nights.
From reviews I have read, there are nice and not-so-nice rooms, even in the same category. So, I may get a standard double, but your standard double may be MUCH nicer than mine. I bet they sell the less desirable rooms at the reduced rates.
We will be on our honeymoon, and I'm hoping that the hotel won't be full and we can play the "we're on our honeymoon" card and get a room upgrade.

Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?
Just stayed here last weekend, it's a really nice hotel, again we booked that Lastminute.com deal, I doubt we'd have stayed there otherwise. The location is spot on, you can smoke in your room (we requested it) however there's a flyer in your room which stipulates "no drugs allowed" so we didn't bother running the risk.
It's far better to smoke your weed on Dam Square and then try to get back to your room
