September 5th - 8th next visit

Post by DaveS »

It's not for a couple of months yet, but everything's in place for the next expedition!

Flight's were booked a couple of months ago to get the best possible deal on the flights - £70 return (I often get it a bit cheaper, but my friends waited too long deciding which days they wanted to go and it bumped the price up by about £20!)

Still, we got the hotel at a better rate because of repeat visits there - this is a fantastic way to do things BTW. If you like a particular hotel you've stayed at, and especially if it's a "family-run" kinda place, then ask if you can book direct with them in future, rather than going through on-line booking sites... My friend and his Mrs have used this hotel on Raadhuisstraat several times now and got to know the owners quite well. Because we're the more mature types who don't (always  ) party all night and set off fire-alarms for fun, I guess the owners are happier to have people they know staying there, rather than a mob of youngsters running up and down the corridors and burning down the rooms! Anyway, they gave us a great discount, so why not?

It's a little further out from the centre of town, but very close to Grey Area and Amnesia, with only a little walk to De Dampkring and Tweede Kamer, so very useful... There's an Albert Heijn close by as well for stocking up on those late night munchie session essentials!

We normally go during the week, as it's a bit quieter, but this time as you can see, it's a weekender - should be fun! :)

The plan will be to head for Barneys as soon as we reach the city (early morning flight) so a good breakfast and a toke nice and early will be on the cards - after killing an hour or so there, a leisurely walk up Herengracht, Rastababy next, with a stop-off at our main staging-post, Amnesia, before booking in at the hotel and dropping off our bags.

The rest of Friday will probably rotate around Amnesia and De Kuil with trips to assorted gems along the way to try out anything new. For the Saturday, I'm treating my two friends to a trip out to Haarlem as they've never been outside of Amsterdam before - Willie Wortels here we come!!!

It's cheap enough on the train, and only a 15 min journey to sample some of the finest Haarlem has to offer, plus it keeps us away from the hustle and bustle of a Saturday afternoon in the centre of the 'Dam! Saturday night will probably be spent chilling out back at Amnesia, with munchies taken care of with either a nice big steak (it's my friend's birthday on the Saturday) or an all-you-can-eat chinese - failing that, you can't beat the Lemongrass Wok on the corner of Oudebrugsteeg and Damrak for value and nice, fresh nosh!

Sunday will probably be the day for trying out some of the places we haven't yet sampled in our many visits, but if our heads are still a little sore, it might just be back to Amnesia yet again - yes, we really do love this place!

Sadly all good things must come to an end, so on the Monday we will try to fit in as much as we can manage (or afford) until the plane leaves in the early evening...

I can't believe it's been nearly a year since my last trip over there - money's been a bit tight this year and the Euro exchange rate hasn't helped much either, but I'm hoping to be over again on a solo mission in the latter half of October... I've booked the time off at work, so it's just getting the plane tickets now if I can stretch to another mini-holiday so soon after the first! Here's hoping...

Well, since posting this morning, I've pushed the boat out and booked flights for October 20th-23rd - cheaper even than my September trip!

Flight out was £2.99, return £7.99 - with taxes etc. a grand total of £65!

Hotel has also been booked online - Hotel Vijaya. Stayed here once before on a solo trip and found it ok, nothing special but clean and with a shower in the room... I may well cancel this after I get in touch with the hotel Di-Ann, where I'm staying in September as I should be able to get a better deal. Dunno though, as the Vijaya is much closer to the heart of the action (RLD!!)... We'll see. The curries weren't too bad, from what I can remember, and I think you get an extra discount off your meal if you're staying there.

These days I always try to get an en-suite room if possible - too many bad experiences with shared facilities (Quentin Arrivee springs readily to mind) - I had to wait nearly an hour and a half to get a shower there. One shower between three floors... not good. For the extra dosh I'd much rather be able to have a shower when I want, and not have to step through fecal matter and other assorted bodily waste products which were liberally distributed everywhere. Good job I have health insurance, eh?

Thanks for that FlyByNite!

I ALWAYS enjoy myself in Amsterdam, whether I'm blipping around with friends or just on my own - it's a different vibe when you're flying solo of course, but there's always plenty to do and see - and lots of new places to try!

17 days to go!

Got most of me money converted to €'s now, so if the exchange rate gets any worse I shouldn't lose out any more... I converted £300 at first, but have since had an unexpected windfall, so another £200 has been chucked into the pot (well, it's probably going to get used to buy pot!) - I don't like having to count my money everyday to see how much I have to ration myself, so that should give me enough of a comfort zone to be able to kick back a bit more... maybe go for some of the tastier iceolators this time... hmmmm...

The flight situation has been fluctuating up and down like crazy - I saw my October flights go up from the £65 I paid originally to about £90... then go straight down to just £48 in the last week. BMIBaby's sale is now running flights for £0.00, so you're just paying the taxes. You never know when is the best time to get your tickets these days! :?

Still - won't let that upset the apple-cart... Got plenty to do on the first trip in September - a few more new places to try, like Basjoe's, which seems right up our street, so to speak... Nice, friendly, relaxed atmosphere from what I read - just what the doctor ordered to sooth my frazzled senses!

And then the October solo mission - one of the guys at work said he might like to come along, but hasn't said any more for the time being, so I might just leave it alone, as I'm sure he hasn't remembered it since, and I'm not 100% sure he'll be the best company - I'm not a miserable old git, but sometimes I like to just go do my own thing without having to "babysit" anyone (he's never been to Amsterdam before, and though he claims to be a bit of a hard-head when it comes to the herb, from what I've seen, he's only experienced brick-weed and what he describes as "that weird skunk shit" once in a while)... Can anyone say "Whitey-Candidate"???

Right then - breakfast is calling... Nice bifta to follow (it's my day off, so I can relax for now...)

by the sounds of it...you won't have to babysit....feed 1 joint then leave in coffeeshop for 4 hours...he'll probably won't have moved (and not thru choice) hahahahaha.......wish bmi would fly from norwich as the cheap flights get cancelled out by the cost of getting to the airport plus the time thing getting there is offputting for us in darkest norfolk

I know what you mean about all the travelling - it takes me more time to get to the airport from my place than it does to fly from Birmingham to Schipol - at least we've got some budget airlines in the area - I couldn't face the coach journeys that some folks endure...

I like your 'whitey candidate' statement, and know what you mean as i have had to babysit a first timer aswell(i know we were all first timers some when) but i never pasted out on any body before.

Hey Dave,

I'm heading out to the dam again 4th-7th Sept.

I'll try and catch up sometime, although I've never managed a successful meet in 6 trips

Generally I always try to buy my flights as soon as they are up on the website - so for the summer flights, check the previous winter/spring time or whenever they decide to release them... That way you get the best options all at the same starting price.

However, BMIBaby sometime like to confuse us poor stoners by then having a sale on the flights (especially if they're not selling too fast) - this throws all sorts of spanners in the works if, like me, you check the prices regularly to see how they've gone up!

Right now, the flights we're taking this Friday 8th September have gone up from the £65 we paid back in March or whenever it was, up to a whopping £232.38 each, but the October trip I'm going on went from £63.38 (what I paid) up to £78, then down to £48 in the sale (£0.00 for in & out flights - paying just the taxes!) and is now £72.38 again...

Usually the prices will then steam up to stupid levels right at the last minute as people suddenly realise they've waited too long to get the bargains...

Trust me, back in the early days, before I knew about all this new-fangled modern interweb gadgetry, I was paying £140 all the time flying with KLM - I thought all my birthdays had come at once when I found out about... <drumroll> BUDGET AIRLINES!

What? Return flights to Amsterdam for less than £50??? Never thought I'd see the day, but there ya go.

How do I judge it? Oh man... I just get a little high and let my fingers decide for me. I booked October just because the flights were silly prices, and I had some time left to take off work before November, but it's all about keeping your ears to the ground and seeing when the best deals come up - you can usually sign up for bulletins from the budget airlines, so they'll let you know when the deals are available - or just come on here and see when everyone finds out!

In 48 hours time I will most likely be sat in Amnesia... Can't wait - Amsterdam, here I come!

Well here I go...

Off over to my mates place now for a bit of a night out before the early morning departure tomorrow. Bag is packed - just a small 35l rucksack to do me for the 4 days... Makes it a lot easier wizzing through the airport on arrival, rather than sitting in baggage claim for an extra 45 mins to an hour!

If I manage to compose myself for enough time, I'll try and post a couple of updates, but no guarantees!

I always sit here for a few minutes before every trip, convinced I've forgotten something important, but no. This time I think everything's in place.

Passport? Check.

Money? Check.

Travel Insurance? Check.

Spare socks etc.? Check.

Passport? Check.

Hmmm.... Deja vue....
