The government wants to reduce number of bicycles stolen yearly from 700,000 to 600,000.

THE NETHERLANDS - A national campaign against bicycle theft is being launched in the Netherlands on Wednesday. Every year, 700,000 bicycles are stolen. The government wants to reduce this figure by 100,000.

The campaign is urging bike-owners to use two locks, attaching one to a fixed object such as railings. It also urges them to register the frame number or chip number, report bike theft and not to buy stolen bicycles.

Interior Minister Guusje ter Horst is launching the campaign in Utrecht, where she will symbolically lock her bike properly.
