Smoking ban prompts café sales
Thursday 12 June 2008
Some 1,300 bars and cafés are up for sale on any given day, but that total has now reached 1,600 as the smoking ban nears, the Volkskrant quotes Tvadar Tullner of catering sector magazine Horeca Vizier as saying.

that many people are selling there business's due to the smoking ban??
in canada we are mostly smoke free... we even have all cigarette products hidden behind counters and such so its not in sight of the customers.. bars are completely smoke free and so are hotels and cafe's..we have a stupid saying here that the gov't uses... out of sight .. out of mind. basically there is no promoting smoking of any kind..
but life still goes on... many bars are still packed house most nights and its more or less back to business as usual..people just crowd the outside of the places or even the terrace's when they want to go out for a butt... even in the -30 winters with 2 feet of snow on the ground... we have heat lamps and little shelters that the bars build so people can smoke...
do the dutch business owners predict a complete drop off in sales in bars and cafe's because of the no smoking ban?? i mean people can still smoke cigarettes outside and on the terrace's cant they?? bars can still accomodate smokers by going outside etc... why are so many people selling there business's??
thats really too bad

When Things Are Down Get High!!
All valid points, cheese.
Here in the UK the smoking ban came into effect about a year ago. From my experience, popular central bars and nightclubs are still very busy, the ones that could have provided smoking areas on outside terraces and the ones that couldnt you simply have to go out front, attendance seems to be the same.
Smaller locals though seem quieter, Im not sure on exact figures but ive heard more pubs are shutting (although beer and utilities are rediculously expensive aswell which is obviously a factor).
I could see the problem hitting a lot of the smaller brown cafes around Holland personally, I may be (and hope i'm) wrong though. [/i]

I think that in Amsterdam and or Holland as a whole the smoking ban may cause unique issues of it's own. As if other parts of Holland are mirrored by Amsterdam, then many, many places will simply not have the space to make or errect a terrece on the front\rear of the premises.
Sure in the UK it was far easier to deal with, as most pubs\bars simply re-opened long shut beer gardens. Amsterdam simply does not have that option as from what I can tell far to many places clearly never had them to start with. Coffeeshops do have the option of the sealed room thing and as we know some seem to be doing that to get around the ban. But other coffeeshops simply dont have that option due to the lack of space.
The same is true for regular cafes and bars in Holland I feel. Sadly I can see a lot of places closing down in the next few years. And then and only then after it's all to late will the Dutch live to regret being part of the EU in the first place I feel!.

Smoking will be allowed on patios in the Netherlands still after July 1, 2008. There is some debate still going on about smoking in outdoor tents.geoffk wrote: Will the Amsterdam ban affect patio smoking?
And it's not only coffeeshops that can have a separate room for smoking without employees working in that room. Bars, restaurants and clubs have that option also. The Paradiso is no longer going to allow smoking of anything in either concert hall but they are enclosing a small room for smoking tobacco or cannabis.
