Stella is my prefered brew for watching the footy on a sat afternoon.

And I'll certainly try what you suggest on my trip Boner. As simply put as much as I also like my Stella, I also love to try the hard to find or lesser known or non bar stocked beers when I'm overseas. Well untill they get to a rediculous price per bottle, unless it's something 1 off or special.

OT somewhat but I notice cider seems never to get mentioned!. I like this but find it so hard to find in Amsterdam. Is it simply not drank there as a Dutch brew?.

I don't dislike Stella, just think it has a weird taste compared to others I drink. If I am drinking purely to get pissed quickly then Stella it is, if I am more into a social drink or lasting longer then I go with something else.

I personally have never been a cider drinker (except the odd Snakebite!!) but agree that it doesn't seem to be a popular drink in Amsterdam....or I may just not have been going to the bars that serve it. Unlike here in Dublin where almost everyone who doesn't drink Guinness is on the cider.

Magners with ice = bliss imo.

Dave the bottles/cans are cheap as fuck in AH, a friend of mine saw a case of 24 bottles for about €4 yes €4.

dont forget in supermarkets like AH, the price listed is for the beer ITSELF. you pay a extra fee for the bottles and the crate (about €0.10 per bottle). Once you have consumed your beer, return the crate (and / or bottles) to AH and put it into the recycling machine, which will then print you out a receipt for the value of the bottles. Same goes for plastic softdrink bottles.

AH sell crates of 20 half-litre bottles of grolsch which is always a good deal I find. Much nicer than stella!

Well I'm going to be sure to have a bloody good look round the shops for some local stuff then. Prob those little stubbie bottles (200 ml) for that sort of crazy price!. I like the idea of putting extra on the cost of the case to help the recycling program in Holland. Something I think needs to be done in the UK!.

Now Grolsch on the other hsnd for me is a strange taste compared to a lot of other beers. Cant say good or bad, just different. And it's that different taste and flavour that I like to look for.

Boner, I'll probably end up thanking you loads for pointing me to Albert Heijn by the sounds of things come the end of my trip!.

Last time I picked up individual bottles from the local bio store. They had some local brews (Brouwerij 't IJ) as well as Hoegarden and others. Of course you could go to De Bierkoning

Kind of would you or would'nt you to get some dirt cheap beer from AH?. On 1 hard as said it's dirt cheap for beer if your 1 of those who like your beer but dont want to have the piss taken out of you by what you are charged in a bar. But at what cool and or warm temperature would you be willing to drink your beer at?. Assuming you dont have a fridge in your room\dorm?.

In any case been drooling over the options at AH and found the €4 (well actually €3.79) for the 24 bottles of beer that I thought Boner must have posted the wrong price for:

http://webwinkel.ah.nl/process?fh_locat ... ules.build

Wish that AH site would list the strength of the beer to!.

I said €4 as I wasn't 100% on the actual price, I'd imagine it'll be 4+% though.

Anything less than 4% alc and I class it as shandy. As for me 4% is the minimum strengh I'd drink beer at. But I do love some of the very strong beers that are like 6.5%+.

I cant see me getting that €4 gear as the 6 packs of the more premium beers at AH look far more attractive a drink to try than the generic cheap beer we all get back home anyways. Like I said would far prefer to drink the more local stuff you've got no chance of finding once you get home.

Certainly want to try some of the Grolsch beers. And the Amstel options look pretty good to try as well.

Just checked and there is a AH just off Dam Square so I'll be happy with that!.

If you want strong try the Maredsous Tripel (10%) or the Ij Brewery's Zatte Tripel (9%) both kick.
