After doing some research on here, I came to the conclusion that it would be in my best interest to book my hotel reservation as far in advance as possible. The hotel prices won't go down, my best selection is early. As for my flight, I've found a flight from the states for $714(tax incl.). I've heard if you wait till a month before (give or take) you can find some nice deals. And last minute fares are high. I figure $714 is a fair price and I will have the apartment booked already booked so I'm not willing to wait it out for a better price.
I want to book the first 8 days in December. Planning on staying 5-6 nights in the city and a couple out of city limits. With this being right after the cup, is it common for the winners to be sold out? I will be stationed right by Grea Area and would be seriously dissappointed if they don't have their top notch gear because they were so busy the week before. If experienced go'ers (you) think is a 50/50 chance of happening I will defidently back this trip up a couple weeks or maybe after x-mas. I know locals say they don't know the Cup's even going on..but in all honestly, i imagine the winners to get hit hard. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks guys.

i went last year just after the cup (i'm a bit of an anti-capitalist and don't go in for all that commercial stuff!) and found that Cshops were well-stocked. Some were advertising their buds as "cup-winners" "cup runners-up" etc so don't worry about bud availability

my advise would be:
worry about the flights rather than the hotels. in my experience, hotels are readily available all over the city, and in fact are cheaper if u get them there. (of course if its a well known small or specific place eg bulldog/flying pig then get it as quick as possible they will sell out). if your not worried where you stay, youll definatly get somewhere central, and a bit cheaper last minute. just shop about.
i serioulsy wouldnt worry about any weed being out of stock. ive been beofre and after the cup times, but deliberatly never during (ive heard popular shops get rammed occasionally). i really cant say that i noticed any difference in quantity or quality, than if i was going 6 months beofre or after. all year round its good.
your gonna have an awesome time no matter what.
youll prob do what i do, and have a huge plan and checklist, then have one early morning spliff, and completly go off track and end up forgetting half the things to try
another peice of adivse is to look and smell various types of strains rather than just buying the name youve heard. there are some unearthed gems out there, and also some rather dubious versions of big nmaes. definatly, some of the strains have a good name for a reason, but when you get to the menu, ask to check out a different one, one you have never heard of, aswell. its all about strain hunting.

ur right about booking in advance .. much cheaper.
as for the cannabis cup.. pretend it doesnt exist... it wont affect anything you do in december.. in fact the shops will be less busy, people more friendly etc... you will actually have a better trip for missing the cannabis cup.
also for hotels.. depending on the type of hotel you plan on staying at, i would say it would be different depending on the class of hotel.
i would check expedia etc for any hotel deals, as normally some hotels give a night free if you book 4 nights or something. as much as there are hundreds of hotels in amsterdam, the good ones do book quick.. and i wouldnt chance going there without booking a hotel. it also depends on how much you plan on being in your room. and who you are going with.
cheers dude and have a good trip!

to be honest from your perspective your right. for me the dam is 55 mins away by plane. and i guess a lot cheaper. that means we are more inclined to get what ever cheap (and only a couple of times nasty) place coz we are only over for short sharp 72 hours each time. we can catch up on rest when we get home.
(going travelling aside) i certanly wouldnt travel 1/3 way round the world without knowing where (and in what) i was staying.
however, i would say that 50% of my trips, have not had prebooked accomodation, and every time the tourist info place in centraal station has been:
A) very helpful
b) very extensive in choice and availability
c) cheaper than the listed prices on booking sites.
the nasty places ive stayed in, were because we entrusted finding a place to some friends who arrived earlier. funny in retrospcet but those were some horrid rooms.

that another story though

Right after I moved here last year there was not a room anywhere in the city. They all said they had no rooms, most posting signs in the door because so many were trying to do what you suggest.
It depends on the time of year, this was August or so when the signs went up. If you go when its really cold I dont think there are many issues getting a room, although if you havent been before keep in mind most of the hotels that exist are not that cheap for what you get, sometimes jail cells are larger.
You also can look at hostels (dorm style shared room usually) which often are much cheaper. There is one "stay ok" that is on timorplein - east of the city center, the 14 tram is right outside and goes direct to rembrandtplein, which is near the red light district, and easy to get to most anything you would want. stay ok is reasonably sized, looks clean (I volunteer at offices just around the corner so I see it often), and is probably more moderately priced because of its location. Really is 10 minutes on a tram too much if you are wanting to save money?
Trams cost 1.60 for 1 zone (that station is the centruum zone, just on the border) you can buy on the tram or goto a tobacco shop (or some groceries) and get a stripenkaart which is good for multiple passes, a 15 slot one is about 1 euro for 1 zone (it takes 1 slot for the door, one per zone, so minimum is 2 slots - you can reuse it for other trams within 1 hour from the time stamped on it too).
Taxis are going to be 30-50 euro from the airport, but the train is cheaper. And from central station you can get most anywhere by tram if you need to. I do suggest that if you are looking to save money you try it this way.
