CoffeeShop Etiquette - Help needed asap ;)
CoffeeShop Etiquette - Help needed asap ;)
You know at some of the coffeeshops i.e Green House effect on Warmostratt, is it cool to smoke your weed on the seats outside that are kinda IN the street? Might seem like a silly question, but have always wondered but never bother to ask! Just its not technically in the coffeeshop so I dont know if this is frowned upon. On top of this, could anyone recommend some good coffee shops (in the Centrum area is poss) where they have somewhere to sit outside and chill with your smoke; I am going tomorrow and the weather is set to be good, so i dont wanna be stuck inside. Any ideas people - Cheers

As far as I am aware, it is still very much illegal to smoke weed outside the coffeeshop area itself. Yes, I know strictly speaking it is "illegal" to smoke anyway, but they'll jump on you for smoking outside on the street.
Last year, on arrival in the early morning we headed up to Barneys for breakfast and a toke and could only get seats outside. There weren't many people about, so I skinned one up and set about getting my head into the right state. The girl serving us told us in no uncertain terms that we CANNOT smoke outside, and could get ourselves and the coffeeshop into trouble for doing so...
From time to time, I've wandered up the less-travelled streets with a spliff discretely palmed in my hand, taking the occasional toke, but always keeping an eye out for passers-by. You'll always smell weed being smoked openly over there, (Hell, they do it on all the buses here!) but I think the key is just to be cool about it and don't make everyone aware what you're doing out in the open.
At the end of the day, it's really just good manners not to be blowing clouds of smoke over the general populace - we're visitors to their country and city after all, and if everyone were to abuse this situation, I'm sure you'd see more prohibition of our favourite herb. Discretion is the answer...

That is one way to make me jealous, hope you are having fun though.MOFOFUNK wrote:Sat in The Coin now with some NYC
Always ask before you are going to have a smoke outside, they can only say no and at least you know where you stand. I once asked in Amnesia a couple of summers ago if I could smoke outside and they said only joints and not pipes or bongs as it looks bad.
But I agree that Vondelpark is a must.

The use of cannabis is not illegal in the Netherlands. Their is only one small area in the west of Amsterdam were it is not tolerated to smoke outside and it's posted with no cannabis smoking signs warning of fines.DaveS wrote:As far as I am aware, it is still very much illegal to smoke weed outside the coffeeshop area itself. Coffeeshops like Barney's with no outside seating are only trying not to lose their coffeeshop license by telling you you are not allowed to smoke in front of their shop. The same as a bar without outside seats, your not allowed to consume their products out front.
We are all not visitors to Amsterdam on this forum, some of live here. I've been smoking in the streets, parks, canals & beaches of Amsterdam since 1973 without a problem. Just be considerate of those around you when you do smoke cannabis outside in Amsterdam.
I stand corrected! Perhaps I should have said, "The use of Cannabis is tolerated", because the law is rather ambiguous and often mis-understood. This ‘Policy of Tolerance’ (in Dutch: ‘Gedoogbeleid’) is quite a grey area, and although we were seated in an area which was operated by Barneys, we were told quite emphatically that smoking on the streets anywhere is NOT permitted.itsmymagicallife wrote:

Thanks for clarifying the point!
Amen to that...itsmymagicallife wrote:
