The guys at Central were worried that becoming a takeaway only bar, losing their drink money, would drive them out of business. Not because it's the major part of their earnings, but it's an integral part.
They could not survive on drinks and food alone, and they cannot survive on Marihauna alone.
Derry stated that the only way his coffee shops were able to make any money at all was by selling all of their other items other than weed (at this point he was talking to me about opening up "Barneys Up Town"). He then went in to depth talking about how the Dutch government taxes weed so highly, he doesnt understand why any other countries havent done it.
Although, Derry did say, that it is possible to make a lot of money out of marijuana. Although, it is not in the individual sales. He said most of the money was made during the actual Cannabis Cup.
John from Grey Area said the exact same thing about coffeeshop Grey Area making loads of money during Cannabis Cup from various different forms of donations and prize money.
Talk to any employee in a coffeeshop who has a say, they will tell you that weed doesnt make them the money to stay open.
EDIT:
as one person said, the coffeeshops rep is very important to their sales. Yes people may come there because of the weed, but thats not where the money is made. Yes, the two do go hand in hand, as another member said they can't make money off of just drinks, or off of just weed.
It is the weed that brings customers, the weed that drys throats, and the weed that makes bellys rumble. It is no doubt that they make money off of marijuana, or maybe i should rephrase that. It is no doubt that coffeeshops make money off of what Marijuana causes.
Notice how gradually all of the smaller, privately run coffeeshops get taken over by larger monoplies. Because these larger companies can stand to loose money to make money.

Not in Free I. If you don't order weed and drinks you won't get anything.Better to do a bit of research on here and go to shops that are more welcoming. You'll get much better weed as well.
I saw a lot of good reviews of this place, and made a trip down that way specifically to visit it. Got there and it was really ratty inside. Constantly played really loud eminem videos on the tv and every time one finished, the guy sat channel hopping till he found more eminem. There were a bunch of locals in who seemed really quite unfriendly.
Anyway had gone there for their famed blueberry. Sat down and asked for drinks and the guy told us we had to buy weed to sit there. I was a bit pissed off because I'd come specifically for a 5g bag of blueberry and had just wanted to sit for a second with a drink first. Anyway, bought 5g of the stuff and it really wasn't worth it in the end, marginally better than a mate of mine's first ever grow of blueberry. I would never go to the noon again. Also, one of my mates who was there with me sprung up with a dodgy looking bite mark after sitting on the old shoddy pillows there, looked a bit like a flea bite :/

isnt the noon and mellow yellow actually the same owners, same menus, same staff?
i havent felt any thing he described in the mellow yellow...
i sat down with my drink and smoked my own weed, had to buy some SSH there anyway, so i wasnt really ticked when i asked to use the vaporizer and he told my that if i wanted to use the vapo i had to buy some weed. its only reasonable that if u gonna use a shops' vapo u buy some weed there...

Same experience here. It was on Queensday 2007 the blueberry sucked too.
Thanks, I was quite proud of that. I was sitting at St Christophers with that.
Oh that's a point...
When I have too much gear to want to buy anymore, I just roll on over to St Christophers/Winstons, whatever it's called, on Waarmoestraat, or some other smoke friendly bar and order a drink and smoke.

Well that makes everything ok then... A coffeeshops main revenue is from dope sales, if you think otherwise then why aren't they just another one of the many cafes in the city. I'm also sure that the Tax margin in an over priced tourist driven city like Amsterdam is just the same as developing Slovenia.... I <3 stoned logic...
Why that Stone Phillips sounds like quite a bloke.
If you're gonna stay in the centrum (ie Grasshopper et al) then you KNOW you're one of thousands, just move out towards other CS. How about a positive thread of the CS that are really into excellence, both dope and foodwise.
I went to a small 'town' (?) called Loenen and (at the time) they have just one CS and felt welcomed like an old friend.
