Facebook beach party forces alcohol ban in Torbay
A seaside resort is to stop every shop and pub from selling alcohol after it was targeted as the venue for a "night of mayhem" beach party for 10,000 people organised on the social networking site Facebook.
Officers in Torbay, Devon, say that thousands are expected to gather at one of five possible beaches for the mass party at the weekend.
The event has been advertised on Facebook with organisers hailing it as "the biggest ever beach party" with alcohol, loud music and barbecues.
Described as a "night of mayhem" the exact location and time will not be posted until hours beforehand and police, fearing a health and safety risk, are desperate to stop it taking place.
Officers claim the mass beach party will be held next to one of five beaches - in Torquay, Paignton, Preston, Goodrington or Broadsands.
They are now set to use powers under the Licensing Act 2003 to introduce an emergency blanket ban on the sale of any alcohol in the five areas.
Police say as soon as they know the location every retailer and pub in a specified area will be banned from selling booze until the party is cleared.
Superintendent Chris Singer said: "The event is likely to cause disruption and difficulty for our community. The supply and consumption of alcohol would add to those difficulties.
"It may therefore be necessary for me to apply to magistrates to instigate the provisions of Section 160 of the Licensing Act 2003.
"I fully understand making the order would be an unprecedented step, and one which would not be taken unless fully justified."
So far over 7,000 youngsters have confirmed their attendance and police say the number is likely to rocket to 10,000 before it takes place between July 4 and 6.
But licensees in the area said that banning alcohol on one of the busiest weekends of the year would be "catastrophic" for retailers.
Brian Harris, who runs The Yacht pub in Torquay, said: "Any ban will annihilate trade which is already struggling."

I find sites like Facebook disgusting when they think they are above the law and feel they can rightfully organise illigal events where they know there will be vast problems and disturbance to such a level.
Do Facebook think they are clever?, is the cost to the local area or knowing of the diversion of local resorses like police, fire and medical services to try and sort the problems once they happen really what it's all about. How irrisponsable of a website thats likes to make itself look responsable to allow something like this to be openly planned on there site!. Once things have all gone to pot and there have been vast problems in the area you can quarantee Facebook will say it was nothing to do with them and neither any of there staff were aware or had anything to do with the planning of the event!.

I can't believe how clueless you are on how events are organized on Facebook or similar sites!Dave J wrote:I find sites like Facebook disgusting when they think they are above the law and feel they can rightfully organise illigal events where they know there will be vast problems and disturbance to such a level.

These Facebook events are legal activities. You are a member of a site ACD which promotes smoking of an illegal substance but you have no problem with that. You are such a hypocrite!
No they aren't.itsmymagicallife wrote:These Facebook events are legal activities.
The Criminal Justice Bill put any unlicensed gathering of people with music into "rave" category and is therefor illegal. I've been putting on outdoor parties for years, I've read up about the subject in great detail & I've also dealt with/spoken to/tried to charm more police than you can shake a shitty at, trust me when I say it is very much illegal...
..........
I was refering to the illigal status based on the link posted to the tube station incident (if really to do with Facebook) and other police reports on the subject of this weekends "planned" event.
How can it be legal to organise an event which in all fairness to those just going for a good time , that the vast majority are going with no intension to do nothing more than cause a vast disturbance for the locals and leave a hell of a mess that will cost the local council many thousands to sort out. Plus the probable costs of tens of thousands in emergency services that the tax payer will have to fund to keep an eye on all the trouble that very few can doubt will happen!.
If it were legal then Facebook would have gained a licence off the local council for the event and paid for the cost of security and to hire any other relevent services like medical, sanitation etc.
There is a point, is everyone going to bring a porta-loo for each group going or are they all going to break the law by pissing and shitting where ever they please in public when pissed?. As there is NO WAY they will get in the pubs!.
itsmymagicallife - I hear what your saying but the 2 are hardly a similar things as such, except both illigal (if cannabis tollerated of cause lol). The main difference it that what's illigal we do in Amsterdam and talk about on here has provisions made for it and is a well setup and organised thing, the other is not!.

YOUR AN IDIOT. itsmymagicallife tried to explain to you, and you are still going on with your rant.
ok, lets try and keep this simple.
Facebook as a company did not organise this party. They are a website, like this one. If I organise a meet and greet on here, that is me organising it on the ACD site. It doesnt make it officially an ACD gathering, and ACD is not responsible.
Same goes with facebook. A user of their site has created the listing. Not Facebook HQ.
Comprende?
I'm an idiot for having an opinion?!. I thought rules of this board states WE are entitled to have personel opinions that differ from those of other members without being attacked on a verbal level for having that personel opinion?. I respect this ruling, it's a shame you possably dont?. All I done was to point out (along with another member to a point) that the meeting WAS illigal (even though apparently cancelled), this is a point of law not an opinion. That was all I was correcting the guy onAsh333 wrote:Dave J wrote:I was refering to the illigal status based on the link posted to the tube station incident (if really to do with Facebook) and other police reports on the subject of this weekends "planned" event.

The rest was my opinion of cause. Facebook (as you no doubt know) is a hugh Company that generates probably many millions of Dollars per month in revenue, employs countless people and is likely a fully regestered and listed company and certainly not anybodys personel blog (I know you've not said that of cause).
So such a company is legally responsable for what goes on within there company (slightly more than a personal opinion this bit lol) . More so if those actions result in a breaking of or promoting a breaking of the law. It dont have to be by an employee who organaised the event they are still legally responsable in my opinion for allowing such an illigal event to be promoted within there company in the first place. I got no problems with any other members over this or other issues, it's simply that I have a different opinion thats all lol.
Er I beg to differ Boner http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-9862792-36.html
