Tilburg Coffeeshops Ignore Smoking Ban
Posted on July 2nd, 2008 by admin

The thirteen coffeeshops in Tilburg have unanimously decided not to adhere to the countrywide smoking ban that came into effect on Tuesday, July 1st. In every coffeeshop there is a letter ready for the VWA (Food and Goods Authority) with an explanation about the collective action.

Company boss Freek Hoeksma who is the boss of two coffeeshops in Tilburg named The Grass Company said “Smoking is a fundamental part of our business and is the source of our income. Therefore we are not going to co-operate with the ban”.

In the letter it states that they officially only came to hear about the smoking ban on June 20th from the council. Most coffeeshops say they are too small to have a separate smoking room.

Lets hope it's more than a token protest. Common sence says at least let the coffeeshops have a say weather or not they are for or against the tobacco ban. I say let the coffeeshops decide if they want to introduce the tobacco ban or not!.
