Ten Beers for the Smoking Room
Posted on July 2nd, 2008 by admin

It is amazing how creative pub landlords have become since the smoking ban came into operation yesterday: Smoking aquariums (Glass rooms), closed smokers societies, smoking cabins, smoking hours, smoking toilets, barkeepers behind glass, smoking holes in the outside walls, self service beer taps for smokers, you wouldn’t believe it.

In cafe Vallen in Vleuten they’ve thought of a way that the clientèle can carry on smoking. “People are in an airtight cabin and they order their beers through an intercom. Hello, this is the smoking room, ten beers by the door please”.

The ’smokers lobby’ of cafe Vallen consists of around thirty people. A pleasant mini cafe with dart boards, good seating, effective air extraction, and maybe more importantly an intercom. Staff and taps are missing. Beer is ordered via a wireless network whereby the barman/lady delivers the goods on a stool outside the smoking area. Only when the barmaid is back behind the bar in her smoke free and safe environment may the beers be collected, via a message on the intercom.

It is reminiscent of a quarantine procedure in a hospital.

great idea!

this article also brought up an idea ..

lets say a coffeeshop or bar were to charge a membership fee... wouldnt this then make it a private place where only members were alowed? we have places like this where im from and basically you pay a entrance fee of like 5 dollars and then you get a card and you are a member... because it is a member only place .. you can smoke in there... could coffeeshops/bars charge a membership fee and then allow people to smoke tobacco in there?? even if the membership fee was like 1 euro?

i dunno im stoned and just thought i would ask.

Boulder has these glassed in smoking rooms, where you can take your beer. They won't serve you in there though.
