Moving to Amsterdam

Post by ravende85 »

First off i just want to say thanks for any help before i get started.

I have been to many website. Me and a friend who are both love to smoke as well as the next person and want to move to amstersdam. It seems to be a bit difficult getting a straight updated answer on websites. We are going to get out passports tomorrow. I was wanting some information about living in amstersdam forever. I have been told on certain websites that visa are not need and visa's are needed.

I am under the impression that there are work visa'a (if need for amsterdam) that are for 90 days. There are also residence visa's that have to be renewed every year for 5 years then you can get a permenate residence visa. The last visa i found is for 10 to 14 years but still has to be renewed.

So I want to move from America to AMS and live there for a while if not the rest of my life. I need some help on what visa i need to get? Do i have to get a work visa and hope that they renew it eveytime?

The best and soundest advice I've heard and read on this is for you to get an immigration attorney. Other options include working under the table, marrying a Dutch citizen, having a baby in the Nederlands...I'm sure there are other options, but I'd go with the attorney.

The main issue is whilst you love to visit Amsterdam and the relaxed lifestyle we all enjoy while there of cause. But you do have to think of if you would have the same thoughts, feelings and opinion of living in Amsterdam or anywere say 3 or 6 months down the road after you move there?. Great if you have the money but you may well soon become bored if you cant find anything to fill your time with?.

Great if it works for you. Just dont make it a 1 way trip if case your deam does not live upto your expectations several months down the road.

I dont mean to sound negative on this, just dont let the thought of a dream to live in Amsterdam mask the full reality of what you are letting yourself in for. And try to find a site or 2 on the issue and really try to find and talk to people who have done what you want to do to see how it's worked out for them.

attorney idea is the soundest advice, you can prob do it on your own but it will be very difficult. there are lots of different rules and regulations regarding ur dutch ID number (forget what its called, like a social security #) bank accounts etc. also try for a bilingual dutch lawyer, as im sure most are, over an american one, peace and good luck.
If it wasnt for the brits, ID BE DUTCH RIGHT NOW

i would also suggest an attorney.

and this may sound silly, but something you mentioned made it seem like you have never been to amsterdam... have u??

have u thought about what you are going to do for work once your there.

have u looked into what your housing options are and approximately how much it will cost you to live there??

best of luck on your adventures

I assume that living in amsterdam would be quiet pricey being as it is the capital city. I am also thinking of moving to holland but maybe somewhere like harlaam as itsonly a 10 minute train journey from dam and will probably be alot cheaper to live there.
Just throwin ideas around

It's 15-20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal To Haarlem Centraal.

getting work

Post by missgreenspirit »

Hi i dont know much about visas from usa but to get work, and a place to live will be your next step... firstly i advise on getting a book called coffeeshop guide you can get them from most tourist shops for about 5e.
secondly you'll need a sofi number from the tax office in AMS.
Hope this helps.

Peace. :D
