I have stayed at the Hotel Vijaya 5 times, the location is great if you wanna be near all the action. The rooms are alright. Ive had a single room, a double, a triple and a quad. They were all fine. Clean linen and towells. The guys that run the hotel are of Indian origin and are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast consists of a selection of meats, cheeses, different breads tea, coffee, and orange juice. There are no evening meals available.

Did you know that Vijaya means Victory in India? God, im a tree of knowledge. :D

Have a nice stay.... 8)

As Axeman9 says - it's a great location etc. etc.

In fact there's little more to add to that except that when I was there a few years back I ate in the restaurant the first night (it's basically a curry house - or was) and got a discount on the meal because I was staying there...

I don't know if this is still the case now - I'm booked in there again late October so I'll find out I guess, but yeah, the place is alright... Nowt special, but it does the job! The room I had was clean with an ensuite bathroom (I hate having to share bathrooms these days, so I'm prepared to spend a little more money than I used to, just for the convenience of being able to have a shower when I want and take a shit without people banging on the door asking who slaughtered the cow in there!! )

It was a little noisy (I always take earplugs now!) but it's right in the middle of all the action, so what do you expect? If you're into a bit of the RLD action, then it really is a perfect place to stop!

Breakfast was fine - usual cold buffet fare, but again, there's plenty of places costing much, much more than this without the extras like free brekkie and a shower to yourself so it's pretty good value really. I seem to remember there was a TV in the room as well - not bad at all.

I got my room this time round for €65 a night - not bad, all things considered...

You should have a great time, gazz! Let us know if they're still doing the food in the evenings - can't beat a good curry after a night in the 'Dam!

I hereby confirm that you get discount curry at their restaurant. Its not bad either, only been once and my arse was on fire the next day  so job done i guess

Oh yeah and all of my rroms have had an en-suite shower and shitter. Although i know some dont have en-suite so beware. The noise int too bad if you have a rrom round the back...

Cheers Dave:

I have been a number of times - the last three times I have stayed at the Abba Hotel. Great hotel, a bit out of the way (highly recommended however!)

I thought I would stay in the middle of the action this time, so like you say I get what I pay (same price)!

It is a shame that the hotel seems to have changed their policy on smoking since I booked. Now all non smoking. I am sure I can find a way round that! I normally find that getting to know the people helps a lot - especially since I will be on my own, not like I will start a riot (hope not).

As for the curries, bring it on. Never used to be a fan but I have come round to them in the last couple of years!

Gazz - I'd never eaten a curry in my life before I came down to the Midlands 20 odd years ago... now I couldn't live without a good old Chicken Dhansak (or whatever is moderately close)!

I love the location of the Vijaya - right in the middle of the RLD for those late-night sessions  - and not very far from the Station if you don't like to carry bags too far or haven't figured out the principles of public transport - and as I said, it was clean and perfectly serviceable - the door locked, the toilet flushed, the shower dispensed water of a pleasing consistency and temperature and the breakfast, if not awe-inspiring, was sufficiently non-life-threatening to tempt me again and again with its marvelous simplicity.

(At least until I realised that Barneys served a veritable artery-blocker of a fry-up early in the morning!!)

BTW - I always pack a roll of bog-paper when visiting Amsterdam - not saying anything about the food... I'm just saying... Be prepared.

Stayed in Vijaya for two nights mid-week. Cheap and basic but clean with private facilities (though not en-suite). Buffet breakfast, as mentioned, was fine nothing spectacular with juice tea coffee cereal bread jams meats cheese and boiled eggs on offer.

No smoking signs on display in halls (€50 fine mentioned) but I smoked in my room no problem on all three days. I felt it was understood that it was not a problem in private.

Discounts available for their other nearby establishments; Indian Restaurant Vijaya (15%) and Indian Bar Restaurant Kamasutra (10% + free drinks)

No luxury, actually there was not even any soap in the shower, at €53 per night no complaints and only a stones throw from Centraal Station.
That said I'll probably try a different option next time.

Just booked this Hotel only a few minutes ago by telephone. The prices had gone up 25 euros from what was advertised on EasyToBook.com, however the guy on the phone said I could have it for the advertised price of 200 Euros for my 3 nights stay, so all in all quite happy about that.

I asked about having a smoking room to the receptionist, and I specifically asked whether I can actually smoke IN the room about 3 times during our conversation, in which he replied yes and of course sir during those times. Apparantely I will have a smoking room with en suite bathroom and tv plus a nice breakfast in the morning... all sounds good to me!!! :D

Sheesh! I can't believe it's been two yrs since I posted that...

I still stop here pretty much every visit, and will probably continue to do so...

The Stoned Shaman - You'll have a great time fella... I always have!

I have never smoked in my room there - if I feel the urge to have a toke, I would just pop downstairs and have one outside - it's not that I don't like to break the rules - I just don't want to get kicked out of my room (as I have known other people in other places have) for the sake of a midnight spliff!

If they've intimated that it's ok to smoke in the room, then go for it - but I would quietly check with them on arrival just to be sure!!!

I don't quite understand what you meant, colin, by "private facilities (though not en-suite)" - my rooms there have always had a private bathroom with shower, toilet and soap! :?

I'm back there in 20 days time, and again at the end of June - it ain't the Ritz, but I like it!

You're kidding AP!

When you say you're booked for 420, did you just mean for the curry or you stayin at the hotel itself?

If the latter, then I'll see you at breakfast, mate! - 21st to 24th I'm there...

Damn, we could do some serious damage to that side of town, fella!
