they can be fun. the more bar like/less stoner nature of the places can be of use now and again, if your in the mood.

i wouldnt advise buying weed at those places, simply because much better is available at a short walks distance away, but i always like to spend some time out the front of the bulldog palace, with a beer, watching the people in leidseplein do their stuff.

if need be, bulldog also sell rolling paper, that has been pre-made into a cone shape so all you have to do is fill them up with weed, twist the top and light em up. (u can get these in all the paraphalia shops too btw)
chelsea, this may be what your talking about. probably cheaper to buy in bulk and looks very helpful to ppl who want J's but cant roll one up. besides the box they sell a pack of 50 pre rolled empty cones

yeah thats the stuff, definatly not the cheapest way to roll mind you. considering papers are free at most counters.

however out in the 'dam isnt the place where u wanna start practicing rolling up, u wanna experience smoking to its full potential so they may be of use to some.

yeah i agree. i can roll, and actually learned my first time in the Dam, (from a mexican guy who i smoked with but he never spoke, like silent bob) but they dont come out so purty (not that it matters to me much how the J looks) but its just easier and faster to roll up 3 cones at a time and be set for the next hour, day however u handle it

For all first timers I suggest S G Collins excellent site:

How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam

What dates in August? I'll post you on the Whos In Town page.

I can't roll worth a flip, yet every joint I roll is perfect.

Just stop by a head shop and pick up a rolling machine. That's what I do.

Dammit5 here,What a fantastic response from all you guys! Excuse the pun,I'm blown away! We'll certainly check out your suggestions-it's so much better to have reliable recommendations from people who obviously know what they're talking about! Peace and great blow to all of you.

Hope I'm not too late in adding my two penneth, some good advice in here already.

I'd say identify 6 top quality places, get directions using the fab map on this site, and then if you manage to get to at least a few of those you'll have checked out some primo smoke and (hopefully) got some decent service.

Bearing in mind you're staying near Leidseplein, you're going to need a "base" coffeeshop close to home. I'd say either Rookies or Dolphins, both pretty good and friendly service. If you fancy a more "bar" ambience try the lively Rokerij on Lange Leideswarstraat.

I'd also recommend the Rokerij at the top of the Singel canal, good weed and a beautiful spot, on a sunny day the front terrace is one of the nicest places on earth, chilling with a spliff watching Amsterdam go by. Quite a way from where you are but if you take your time and stroll up via the canals you're going to be spending time in a beautiful part of the city.

Also up near Central Station, Haarlemerstraat is a street worth a stroll, you'll find a vast array of coffeeshops, many of which serve hiqh quality (if at times high priced) smoke - there are branches of Barney's, Dampkring and the Greenhouse, as well as other notable shops - Picasso, Popeye's etc. And if you're up that way, have a post-spliff stroll along the Brouwersgracht canal - 'tis beautiful.

From my experience, and I've been at least 30 times in the past 10 years, if you're in town for a limited amount of time and want some guaranteed high quality smoke the Grey Area is a safe bet. Again, not cheap, but the quality is consistently high and they do always have a strain or 2 that no-one else does. Shop's tiny and regularly packed, so maybe buy and go elsewhere, like the nearby Amnesia - a smart, comfortable place in another beautiful part of town. They also have some great smoke, and this is a shop I've always found to be popular with the ladies too!

More centrally, Homegrown fantasy is a great place for a smoke, killer weed (if Cheese is on the menu BUY IT) and a cool novelty toilet. De Kuil is an Amsterdam institution with a select menu and unique vibe.

There are plenty more places of course, these are just a few that spring to mind. Plenty of these will sell pre-rolled, and many times I've seen the weedtender skin a spliff up for customers, obviously the weedtender's helpfulness is usually inversely proportional to how busy the shop is. Also, check out the vaporisers - places like Amnesia and De Kuil will happily sort you out with a vapo bag if you buy there - if you don't smoke tobacco they're worth a try.

Enjoy you fucky lucker!

dammit5 here again.Never too late to add advice like that. The places you mention confirm other opinions,so they're going to get a visit(or three). Is the Cheese you mention a heavy high,or what. We've been used to Northern Lights grown organic and smoked pure, but obviously we want to try others. Not particularly keen on hash, like to remain mobile! Unfortunately for us,my best mate of 30 years who grew our supply, died suddenly in February,so we've been cold turkey since then, and I'm of an age and appearance that I'd probably be taken for Plod if I tried to buy on the street! So you can imagine we're REALLY looking forward to our visit! Best wishes, and thanks for taking the time to reply.
