I wonder if there is anywhere that would mind me plugging my lap top in- I would love to work somewhere on my laptop but the battery dies after an hour and a half

Freeworld has always let me plug in my laptop. The easiest to get to plug is in the breaker box at the right front ( looking toward the street from inside ) of the shop. I seem to remember finding an outlet to use in Dolphins.

I can certainly see the advantage of taking your own laptop to a coffeeshop for when you get that annoyingly addictive stoners song going through your head you want to listen to (and dont have it on your mp3 player if you have 1 on you) and the fuckers handling the mp3 jukebox behind the bar think it funny not to satisfy your needs as a paying customer and prefer to play the stoners music from hell of jazz instead!!!.

Ask to plug it in. Its not like they don't have a plug. maybe drop a 50c tip after buying a drink or some weed, shouldnt be a problem. Bear in mind that they have fridges, vaporisers etc, and they all need power so there must be plug points in the room. It may well limit you as to where you can sit though, as they wont want wires running accross where people walk.

A question to ACD travelers. Have you ever had your laptop content checked while traveling? Ever? Before moving to Amsterdam 2 years ago I traveled with my laptop for a living. I still travel with my laptop. Once I had to turn it on right after Sept. 11th. Since then I have to take it out of the bag so they can scan it. I have never heard of anyone anywhere checking content.

Why am I wasting my time with this. Rich, surely you are winding us up? I am curious how much you travel?

MH no it hasnt happened to me but it doesnt mean that it cant. Philly is not pulling ur leg, here is a link to an article from the Washington Post talking all about it. How they can take your laptop and download and share your info.

Of course they can. My question is, Do they ever? Can you imagine the logistics of trying to check every file on every laptop? Impossible of course. That is my point. It does not happen. Do not advise people to be careful what they have on their laptop. This is bad information for new travelers. I speak from experience and am asking who has had a different experience? Besides "a friend" or "a guy I read about". I just don't think it is a good idea to come on to a travel forum and alarm people about something that does not happen.

btw, here was the original quote from PRich. He states they will see what is on your laptop. I say that is not true. What do you say?

you both make good points, we shouldnt try scare tactics if there is no reason but we also shouldnt blow off possible search and seizure. its clear that its a possibility the laptop can be searched, having it happen or not is apparently a crapshoot. even if there is nothing private on the laptop do you want the hassle of being pulled off and searched? i dont. so i guess this is just a fair warning of the possibility

Thats like saying that they can and will strip search you. They can and occaisonally will, but can you imagine if they tried to strip search everyone entering the US, or even just a particular demographic group.
