A captain whose blood alcohol level was 0.19 percent rammed his ship into a bridge connecting Amsterdam with its northern suburbs on Monday.
AMSTERDAM -- A drunken captain rammed his ship into a vital bridge connecting Amsterdam with its northern suburbs on Monday.
The ship, which was carrying a cargo of stone, sprang a leak. Emergency service workers used pumps to prevent it sinking.
Police arrested the 40-year-old captain whose blood alcohol level was 0.19 percent. Under Dutch law, sailors are considered intoxicated if they have a blood alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent.
Police also said the captain violated regulations of sailing and rest times. An assessment of damage to the bridge has yet to be released.
