Black is Beautiful
It is a fact that the presence of people defined as being black is uncommon in paintings during the last few centuries of Dutch (and international) art.
A careful selection of works by Dutch and Flemish artists comprises the exhibition entitled Black is Beautiful. The exhibition, which runs until 26 October 2008,
hopes to offer the viewer an idea of the changing relationship of black people to Dutch art and culture.
Some 135 works are showcased in Amsterdam’s historic Nieuwe Kerk church. These include an oil study by Rubens, an intimate drawing and etching by Rembrandt
and paintings by Jordaens, Mostaert, Breitner, Jan Sluijters, Karl Appel and Marlene Dumas.
