I think they [city council] are under pressure from the government - Christian Democrats - to reduce the number of coffeeshops, hence no new licences and no transfer of licences of closed c/s.

yes they do, but in the 90's there were hundreds more c/s than there are now and some were dealing hard drugs so as a big compromise they closed the ones dealing in hard drugs, licensed the rest, and put a stoppage on new licenses, so current shops wouldnt have more competition and the council could look good, this is just all my opinion, could be wrong but dont think so.

They must be able to be transfered to a different person surely? still the same shop. Just buy that CS as long as it has not lost its license and is still running as a CS.
Examples
Blue velvet,Pink Floyd, and coffeeshop Jamaica have all changed hands so there cs license for them premises must have changed too.Oh and Utopia from the start of the thread.

you are right, maybe it is more about WHO the transfer goes to and how much money they can shell out, bec other shops have not been transfered, right? it seems like only the big shops can afford to takeover another.

Yeh it will deffo come down to the cash at the end of the day.
Dont think you could lease one really but buying would not cause too many probs.
Also to buy is gonna cost mega coz property is not cheap in the Dam.
Like you said it will come down to cash, who you know and are willing to BLOW!

since speaking with friends in the dam who are doing some recon for me, they say the bigger better known shops(in the councils eyes) dont have a problem as they have a proven track record.

they also say that they are trying to limit the ammount of shops available in holland, slowly cut the numbers down.

Its going to get very expensive
And we we all loose them smaller shops (You know the Gems of the Dam).

It would make sense for the council to trust someone who has a proven track record of running coffeeshops before in their eyes. Look at the Barneys lounge, tha was somnething different b4 so that shows that licences are transferable. I'd assume buying any business in the tourist centre of a city would be expensive, you should think about going a lil further out.
