Tougher penalties for illegal sub-letting
18 September 2008

People who rent their homes from the council or housing associations and then sub-let them should lose both tier home and the profit made, according to a ruling by a court in Amsterdam.

The judgement was made in the case involving a woman who sub-let her home to students for €1,000 a month while she paid a rent of €419.

Ymere, the country’s biggest housing association said the ruling is a ‘milestone’ and will help fight housing fraud, reports the Volkskrant.

We've got the same problem here. People who are paying a mortgage on a deed-restricted home, have been charging full and above rent to the trustafarian ski bums.
