Hi all,
i have just finalised a job offer working in Amsterdam, I will be staying in accomodation in a small village called Wijk aan Zee, in the Beverwijk province.
I was wondering if anyone had any information of how easy it is to get in to Amsterdam Centrum from here or any local coffeeshops? Any help appreciated, I will be leaving around the first week of october.

Beverwijk itself is on the train line so that shouldn't be a problem and the town has a few coffeeshops, Milehigh knows the place pretty well hopefully he'll see this and be able to advise you better.

Holy shit, Wijk aan Zee? You will have to take a bus into Beverwijk and then the train into Amsterdam(this is an hour at very best more like 1.5 hours). Where you will be working? You might not want Centraal Station. Best coffeeshop in Bev is "Spliff Cannacafe". Second best is "Life" imo. There are two more you will want to check out. You can do all your shopping at the Zwartemarkt(Black Market) in Beverwijk. Keep your hand on your wallet there.

MHD, I will be working at schihpol but transport to the job is provided, I plan to buy a cheap bike over there so I can get from Wijk aan Zee into Beverwijk much quicker and easier, and from there can take the train into Amsterdam if i feel the urge.

Get a scooter(Bromfiets). Those dune hills and that loooong road into Beverwijk will kill you. It's not really that bad I guess. We often take the high speed ferry to Ijmuiden with spartamet and ride into Beverwijk and then home. That will be another option for you to get to Amsterdam with your bike at no extra charge too. The High speed ferry will take you right to Centraal station. They are cool old Russian Hydrofoils that run every half hour.

Thanks for your replies and help MH, i dont think i'll be able to afford a scooter straight away and I figure a bike will be a cheaper option and will do me for now, which brings me on to my next question, i dont suppose you have any idea where to buy a fairly cheap second hand bike in the area or Amsterdam, avoding the junkies of course!

I've seen some for sale on the Noordermarket in the Jordaan, can't remember the price but they didn't stand out as expensive.
Have a look on here as well:

Ferry, bus, auto, or bike. No train.
