okay i was wondering how to most of the coffee shops check how old you are? because my girlfriend wants to go with me and my friends to amsterdam in march, but she is only 17, would that be a problem?

if she's 17 then yes it will be a problem...passports are the best for i.d. ......please don't try to bring a 17 yr old into a coffeeshop as you are likely to be refused;think about the c/s owners licence, don't put it at risk......if they get caught with an under age toker in the shop it could cost that shop it's licence and ruin it for all.....why not have the 18+ go in and buy, then go to a park or hotel and smoke it if you're that desperate......DON'T PUT THE COFFEESHOP AT RISK OF CLOSURE PLEASE....the law is STRICTLY over 18's

Yes it would be a problem. The law is 18 and by going in there under age she would be putting the licence of the coffeeshop at risk.

All coffeeshops will check your passports usually to check your age if they think you are not 18.

And they do check, i've been checked & i was 25-26 at the time, a friend was checked, she was mid 20's too but didnt have her passport to prove it, so we had to leave....fairplay, it is their livliehoods at stake, i've seen police make spot checks on coffee shops before, did it once when i was in dampkring. So they do get onto people if they have any doubt about your age & they will want to see a passport. Not sure if it's true or not, but someone said on here that it's an offence not to carry your passport with you if your visiting Holland.

So taking her could well mean you & your friends not being to enjoy hanging out in the coffee shops, or that they will ditch you and your gf, so they can enjoy them

I'd tell her it's not a good idea for the above reasons & promise to take her when she's 18

It IS true. It's the law in The Netherlands, as I'm sure it is in many other countries as well. Pax.

Best leave the girl at home m8. Or as some1 said get the gear and smoke in the park although the weather is a bit tempremental.
You could always get a stash from a few shops then do the sightseeing side of things get her tired and wasted. She will have an early night you can go of with your m8s to the CS

I get asked for I.D all the time and i am 33
Enjoy :)

I dont carry mine with me, i lock it away but i always carry my driving licence with me.

i never carry it on me while travelling.. just my drivers license as well.

i do bring it with me, just leave it in the apartment or hotel. and as kermit also said, if need be i could easily prove my age.

im 23 and cant remember being carded in amsterdam on any of visits... maybe it was my beard on a few trips, but even on my last trip i remember being clean shaved and i still dont remember being asked for my passport..

just saying what i have encountered..

and i also can say i have been to amsterdam with my girlfriend and without her , and i would say leave her at home and go with the boys.. its worth the bitching you may or may not get for leaving your girl at home.

just my 2 cents

Puffin......I always carry mine, i cant decide what's safest, part of me thinks leaving it where im staying, part of me thinks carrying it is best. At the very least i would carry a photocopy.

So what's the deal with it in Holland, is there a penalty for not being able to produce it if asked by the police?

matt1024us, just break the news gently  just tell her how strict the age check thing is & that places will ask to see her passport for proof.

Kaiser...I always carry my passport with me and I carry a copy, in my wallet. I have not had the experience of being caught without my passport. I really dont need any hassles from the police. From what I have heard, they will hold you til you can produce your passport, if you left it in your hotel room or the like. I'm not sure if there is a fine involved or not. At the very least, you will have wasted a precious few hours of your vacation time. Do your own thing but I would highly recommend carrying your passport with you. Peace.

She will get asked and if shes under 18 pushed out very quickly, your also basically running a risk of fucking up a cool coffeeshop for everyone else who goes to amsterdam and sticks by the rules.

For example i dont smoke pure execept in amsterdam because of the ban and the risk to the coffeeshop. The coffeeshops are a living for some people not just somewhere you can smoke.

Leave the girl at home man, tbh i cant see why this is a problem. The fact your bird is under 18 is the best excuse to get a blokes only trip to 'dam.
