Depends, some hotels have a strictly no smoking policy others will turn a blind eye. It really depends where you are going to stay for example Rookies will allow you to smoke until your heart is content, where as the Radisson smoking is a no no...

Another plus point for an apartment or houseboat as the majority allow smoking.

Just to clarify that Boner, many (most?) don't allow smoking inside however you can step out on the balcony or terrace of your apartment, or up on the deck of your houseboat, anytime you wish.

Agree that a balcony is the way to go (American hotel on Leidseplein)!

However it does depend on the standing of the hotel. I've never seen a 4 or 5 star that allows smoking on premises since the smoking ban. If anyone knows of any, let me know!

On the other hand, most 1, 2 & 3 star places will ignore it. Hotel Bellevue (3*) & Luxer (3*) never complained, even after the ban.

I've stopped on several boats and in several apartments and they've all allowed smoking inside.

True, many do allow smoking inside however it seems less all the time. Personally I don't smoke tobacco so I do appreciate those that are non-smoking as I have found generally they are appointed a bit nicer than the ones that do allow it. I like to buy lots of flowers while I am there which get lost in the smoke so I have no problem with clean air inside. Each to their own tastes, that's why an apartment or houseboat is the way to go.
